Im looking to put together a low power home file server. As my sister is going to university she is going to need to back up her files somewhere. I am also starting up a business that i am going to be running from home so a back up solution would be nice for me as well. My father also works from home so he would also be using it as well.

I have put together this spec so far.

1x Zotac Ion Intel Atom N230 Mini-ITX DDR2 Motherboard (IONITX-B-E)
2x Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB 5400RPM SATA-II 8MB Cache
1x Antec ISK 300-65 mITX Case - Black (with PSU)
1x Samsung SN-S082H/BEBN 8x DVD±RW IDE Slimline Drive (Black)
1x Kingston HyperX 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel

Does this look ok?

This pc will be on all the time so power saving is an essential part of the build. I have chosen 2 hdds as this will allow me to run RAID 1. Im not sure about the case as i would like to have two normal size hdds in there insted of two laptop ones (2x 1tb drives for the same price). Does anyone know of a small ITX case that can take two normal hdds and a slimline dvd drive?

The other thing i am not sure about is the OS. I have planed to put vista on it and use MS Mesh to sync all the folders together over the net as it is easy to set up and will also allow to to remote desktop into any compter i wanted. Would FreeNAS be a better solution for this application? bearing in mind that is sister will forget to backup stuff so an automated system will be needed

Any advice is all welcome.

Will the fileserver need an optical drive ? I setup mine with a spare DVD drive hanging out the side, then removed it once windows was installed.

Where are you installing the OS ? I'd suggest keeping it seperate from the two HDDs in RAID.

Hummm yeah that is a good point I guess finding a case with 3 hdd mounts will be harder :(

EDIT:

After looking at the MB it has a mini PCI-e slot on it. I should be able to get a PCI-e SSD to go in that for the OS. Will that cause any problems? Also does anyone know if it is a 50mm slot or a 70mm slot (zotac dont say on their site :/)?
