Advice for photographing a mountain bike race?

It's a bit niche innit, this is a bit of a hopeful one.

I have got a Canon 60d with a 35mm f/2.0 prime. And the kit 18-55mm lens. I'm going to a World Cup downhill race this year and wonder if it's worth me trying to take any good photos or if I should probably not bother.

• walking on rough steep ground so don't want to lug too much
• trying to capture some very fast moving bikes
• lighting could be very variable
• on the plus side can get pretty close to the action

Oh alright the reason I don't want to lug too much is more to do with I'll already have a bag full of beers probably.

Reckon I'd have any use with the lenses I have? This is a bit of a one-off for me so I'd only buy something new if it had some more general use likely for me too.

Thanks guys. And it is Fort Bill, yeah, well assumed booyaka. From what I saw of it in pictures and video it looked like away from the finish there should be parts that aren't too busy, are they off limits to Joe Public then?
