Advice for taking pics of flowers

I was taking a few pics of flowers in the garden yesterday evening, mainly for practice, but am not really sure what sort of settings I should be using.

Best of around 8 shots

For this sort of shot what settings should I be using?
EDIT:
Also when taking pics of Flowers what should I have in focus?

(the pic shown is re-sized the original is 4368 x 2912 and for some reason PS has stripped out the ex-if info)

I think the photographer has exif details on a few of the shots.

Focus should be on the stamen. Short DOF (i.e. wide aperture) will held to render the petals nicely OOF. Try shooting in bright sunlight with the use of flash (preferably off board (although with a 5D you dont have one onboard) and at an angle.

Lovely shot, but it feel that the exposure could have been maybe 1 or 2 stops lower.
