Hi All

Been tempted by the recent motherboard deal.

MSI X99A XPower Gaming Titanium Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 EATX Motherboard @ £349.99 inc VAT

Not sure what processor to put in it. Whether a 40 or 28 PCI express processor.

Or wether just for gaming a z170 would be ample.

Hope you can help..

just for gaming z170 is fine, many would argue that the X99 platform would be better as games are becoming better optimized for more threads.

I would say unless you can get the price very close, go for a z170 system. seeming as more than 2 graphics cards is unwise (especially for nvidia cards) then you will only need the pcie lanes for high speed storage

Not much point moving from one quad core to another so I would go X99. That said I'd wait for AM4 boards and Zen if you can.

I wouldn't go for either. Your gpu is the weakest part of your pc. I would look for a second hand i7 4790k so that you can make proper use of that Z97 motherboard and upgrade the gpu.

Exactly this :) Your CPU is still pretty good though, but you would see some massive gains upgrading that GPU.

As above, GPU priority for sure. After that X99 would be the better choice over Z170, although if budget is stretched and gaming is the only use, then Z170 is more than capable of performing at the top level.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I will hold off the upgrade to x99 till the next chipset come along. I agree the GPU is the weakest. So I will look at doing that.

What would be a good GPU to go for, bearing in mind my sig video card has long gone and currently have nvidia 970 asus strik card

Whats your budget and what resolution and refresh rate monitor? :)

I'm guessing your on 1080p

Best upgrade might bb a new monitor
For gaming 1440p seems to be most popular.

Plus if you buy a new monitor especially a higher refresh rate one you will be able to take advantage of a faster gpu.

970 should still be ok in most games at 1080p

x99 is the better long life platform whether you need it is what you will do with it.

if you editing streaming then there is big performance differences.x99 all the way. if you just gaming with nothing else then there is no need really.

Just out of interest what are the advantages of X99 over Z170? I see a lot of people still use X99, I went with Skylake/Z170, and to be honest I totally overlooked X99 as I just saw it as being older, and since I was only buying a mid range i5, it seemed the better option, I know there are 6 and 8 core Haswell/Broadwell CPU's and Skylake's top i7 is only a quad core, but other than that are there any other reasons to choose Haswell/Broadwell over Skylake?

Actually is not long life platform. The next series of CPUs going to be the Skylake-X and a different socket. Broadwel-E is the last CPU for the X99.

@OP.
Keep your current system and if you can upgrade your GPU. If you have the money, wait until Zen and Skylake-X are out to make a choice.

the current fastest broadwell-e cpus will be competitive with the best skylake-x / zen has to offer for years to come. my definition of 'long life' for a cpu is something that lasts 5-8 years. I can see people using 6950x's in ten years...
