It's definitely a position no would envy. All you can really do is keep going to the police. Every day if necessary.

However, depending on where you live, there might not be a local vice squad/officer,and that could explain the delay.
 
though you've handled the situation very well (aside from the printing thing - that was a bit silly), and it's obvious that you know your partner better than any of us could, I think you should let her make her own decisions. Hopefully she'll make the right choice, but even though he's done some pretty deplorable things, he's still her dad and she must be pretty mixed up right now. I know you're angry and you're protecting your family, but you should really let her choose - I don't think "refusing to let [her] take any part in this" is going to be very helpful to her.

Good luck with everything, though. Like you, I can't believe that the police aren't doing more about it than they are. You'd think word would've got around and he'd been lynched by now!!
 
As far as I know from a friend of mine who works with forensics each force has a dedicated forensics unit for computer crime and they get backlogs of jobs hence any delay. And the zip disks if they need them they will try their best to find them as they may contain not only the offending pictures but his contacts who will also be lifted. If you ever read about these types of people in the news they tend to go down with company as they associate with like minded scum. You can rest easy knowing that if there is anything to find it will be found and he will be brought to book.
 
Whilst no one would care about the legality of a keylogger i would've thought it could be used in his defence to make evidence inadmisable (sp) in court.

Unless they find anything on his PC that was siezed which is possible if it was all kept on zip disks, then any screen prints or evidence capured by your keylogger would be thrown out by any reasonable lawyer.

Or have i missed something entirely?
 
Key logger may be thrown out but if he's been doing it for years they will find more than enough to send him down and the key logger would not have mattered anyhow.
 
i would like to think that the police will act. they may be slow moving but hopefully they will get there in the end.

ok this needs clearing up obviously, the screenshots that I printed contained the explorer window displaying a thumbnail of a young girl in swimming costume, not strictly speaking porn as I understand it. It clearly displays the folder system of the Z driver ( removable zip disk ) and contain folders dating back to 2005 with extremely dubious titles.

Help=being given to a football croud for haltime entertainment, I know but as much as they try and say these people are ill I think they are just plain evil.

honestly I'd want him surgically "enahanced" if I had my way, I'm seriously concerned that if not given a custodial sentance he'll re offend and drop out of any help he's givebn or advised to undertake. At least inside I feel more confident that he'd undergo treatment.

He will no longer be a part of our lives irrespective of what happens, I cannot take that chance and would not put my child or any children around me at any risk, we all know these people exist however secretly we all kid ourselves into thinking it's nowhere near us and it'll never touch our lives in any real way.

You are right in every way protecting your child, I have three children and have no idea how you must be thinking or feeling.

Mostly true, fortunately with his computer as evidence they should be able to trace the groups he had links too, with any luck shutting down a larger circle.
 
Isn't there a special number you can ring about this sort of thing? In the police force I mean, and as a backup to the enquiries the OP will be making down the station?

Also just as an aside where are the coppers on this forum when you need them?

The NSPCC have a hotline and follow up via the police or you can ask where the regional/area police team is that deals with those things.
 
Terrible situation to find yourself caught up in and as others have said I too think you've handled it very well so far. I wouldn't worry about the key-logging seeing it is a family machine and you had permission from the other family members to install it.

As far as the IM messages go then there is a copy of all data transmitted back and forth between the parties using it, its kept in the messenger folder which most people don't realise even exist unless of course they are knowledgeable about PC's and from what you've said about him I doubt he is. Also there will be a record of all sites visited in the '.DAT file' and this is very difficult to clean out unless of course you have a reasonable amount of PC knowledge, most people don't even know it exist let alone how to delete cookies from it.

You have my sympathy with this and I hope its all sorted out as soon as possible without too much heartache to you and your wife. :(
