Hey

Basically I've had the same hardrive for 3-4 years now. As you can imagine theres a lot of "crap" on here that I don't want/need or even know about. My desktop runs pretty slow, and I would love to change this. Not only this but I get what I assume to be adware/spyware, with pop-ups saying "critical sytem warning", which I would LOVE to get rid of :D

Obviously, "wiping" my hdd of all of its contents and re-installing windows would be the best thing to do I imagine. However, heres where I run into a couple of problems. I don't actually want to "wipe" my hdd, as I have pictures/work/games/music which I want to keep. Also I don't have a windows xp installation cd, as my current hdd is from a full build bought at pc-world or somwhere. Either way, I don't actully know how to wipe a hdd or what it involves doing :(

What can I do? Any tips/advice on how to get my pc running nice and fast again, and get rid of all the unwanted crap hidden away in the depths of my hdd?

Thanks for any help, Borgia :)

Regarding Windows CD's. I believe there is a utility that can scan your registry and present you with your windows product ID. Then you could borrow a CD from someone and install using your fully licensed key. I'm not sure if this is allowed but it's an option.

I've seen plenty of guides on this very forum regarding cleaning up windows. I think there may be one in the sticky

I did this not long ago.

First thing is tio open up controll panel and remove all unwanted programs. Your likely to have a lot installed you forgot about.

Next is go through all your folders and re-organise and delete any files you don't need.

Then run cleaner to sort out registry and delete temp and other such files.

I managed to delete over 40GB.
