Welcome to the forum...
first thing first: What dod you use your PC for?
2. Are you planing to upgrade your CPU or the entire PC?
3. What is your budget?

thanks for the reply
1.i use my pc for gaming mostly.
2.here is where my knowledge of pc's is not really up to scratch, while i know quite a lot about cpus and graphic cards the rest of the pc while is a bit of a mystery (take for example your forum sig i can spot the graphic card, cpu and the os. the rest i am not so sure about. although if i had to quess i would say power, fan, hard drive and screen).
3. my budget: i am not sure. the two items i had ear marked (AMD Phenom II X4 Quad 955 and Asus M4A78LT-M 760G) came to about £150 so not much more than that. atm i have a core 2 duo which will just about handle the witcher 2 but after that (battlefield 3!) i have my doubt whether it will cut it. hopefully i haven't ramble on for too long and you can gleam some useful information form my "answers".

If you have a 775 motherboard, the simplest effective solution could be a quad core intel processor if it is compatible (Q6600 or greater). What motherboard have you got? Then more memory, how much and what type have you? Lastly overclocking may be a solution.

In answer to your first question, I would spec an 800 series motherboard for the AMD route. Costs about £10 more.

andy.

You'd have to replace the ram as the stuff you have is DDR2, not supported by the 700/800 series boards. If you're asking whether the DDR3 will work in your current setup then no. As far as graphics goes it's a free choice, nVidia and AMD cards work with intel and AMD boards so your 450 will be fine.

would i have to upgrade my cooling system or power source, or does that become required if i oc it? so in summary i should get
800 mobo (either the Asus or amd)
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad 955 ( any other suggestions?)
Corsair XMS3 4GB.

Using the quad core 840 95W could be a solution for a lower power solution. It is 3.2Ghz at stock, but the typical overclock could still be 25% using the bus clock at 250MHz. This would give 4GHz.

If money is really tight you could get a cheap board that would last you whilst you saved for a better graphics card,
ASRock N68C-S UCC GeForce 7025 am2+. It supports ddr2 ram or ddr3 ram.

So you could use 2x1 gb sticks of your old ddr2, and afford to buy a phenom 955.

If not then the above by Nkata is the next best solution bar the processor.

Thank you for advice, really helpful. Although i forgot to mention that i would probably have to, get someone to assemble the parts. As i don't have the pc knowledge, and would worry that i would set it up wrongly and damage/break my pc. cheers.
