Hi there,

It has been about 7/8 years since I built my first PC and I am in need of an upgrade. I am very out of the loop with PC components today.

I have no strict budget but obviously getting the best value for money would be good.

I will be using my computer mainly for streaming my film collection (HD, 720/1080p) via plex to various devices in my home and to some friends & family on their devices. So it needs to be able to handle simultaneous transcoding. I've had a look at the plex CPU guide here to give me a rough idea of what I need.

I also intend on using my computer for film editing, probably Adobe Premier or Avid.

I definitely need to upgrade motherboard, CPU & RAM but unsure if graphics card, PSU, cooling fan will be sufficient. I won't be doing any gaming or anything with the computer.

Here is my current system:

Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz
GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB
4GB DDR2 RAM
Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler

I also have this solo case which I would hope would fit everything in?

I really appreciate any advice, as I said it has been a long time since I attempted a build so I don't really know what are the best components that I should be looking at.

Thanks

I was looking into the streaming side and concluded, if you want to stream to multi people then realistically you need an energy efficient always on server / NAS capable of transcoding potentially multiple highdef streams. QNAP i5 + TVS x71 could be the way to go? Then you could VM into it from a low spec work station as well.
