Advice Needed - GC upgrade

Hi folks, Sorry to start a new thread about the same old thing....

Just looking for some advice really as to what GC i should get. I currently have a Geforce 4600ti :cool: , and am looking to upgrade from that.

I have a max of around £210, and it has to be AGP! Im not really looking to overclock the GC, so a pretty decent spec from standard would be nice. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Id say that for his £210 budget, the Leadtek GeForce 7800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-076-LT) coming in at (£205.57 Including VAT at 17.5%) would be a better bet! ;)
 
Presuming you cpu is socket 775 it would be worth spending a little more and getting a new pci-e motherboard and graphics card. Your money goes a fair bit further when buying pci-e and is the way forward for upgrades in the future. Say a £50 pci-e board and a x1800xt @ £190 would be loads better than going the agp route for only an extra £40 over your budget, even if it means waiting a few weeks to afford it. Also in, say a years time when you come to sell your card the demand for agp will be almost dead so value will drop a lot where as with pci-e it will hold its value longer.
If you can't get a pci-e board for your cpu then I'd go for a 7800 over the 6800. At the moment they are the best agp card you can buy and will serve you well and the performance difference over your current card will be absolutly huge (but not as much as going down the pci-e route ;) )

The jump from the <£200 Geforce 6600's to the £205 Geforce 7800GS will be staggering!

But as said, if you can afford the extra initial outlay, try buying a cheap-ish (yet decent) P4 PCIe motherboard (assuming your on s775), and a Geforce 7600GT, would be a cracking combo for around £250.
 
Unfortunatly, the socket is 478, and i believe you cant buy an PCI-E Mobo for that. Upgrading the mobo, processor and GC is just to much out of my budget atm.

Really im only looking for the upgrade to last a year or so, as i should have more money this time next year, so obviously i dont want to spend huge amounts, just enough to play games like fear, quake 4 etc etc

In which case, if you can stretch to the 7800GS, get one. It will last you a heck of a lot longer than an X800 or a GF6600.

I was thinking as this upgrade is only going to be for a year or so, i shouldnt really spend huge amounts, so am thinking now of a x850 xt. Will this be good enough do you think?
 
I just sold my x850xt to get a x1800xt and it was a great card. Clocked really well and was solid as a rock. Fair enough it doesn't support sm3.0 but that isn't really that much of a problem as its not as though your used to it and its a step back. I got mine to replace my 9800xt and the difference was huge so from your card you'll be well pleased. Can't think of one bad thing to say about my experiance with my x850 and highly recommend it if you want to save a bit of cash over a 7800gs and still have one of the best agp cards available :D
 
X850XT is faster whilst the 6800GS has more features. However in a game such as Oblivion the 6800GS is not fast enough to use these extra features.
