Advice needed here

I just recieved a new CPU in the post this morning, I swapped my old one out (celeron 1.66Ghz) for the new one (celeron 2.6Ghz) however a few secconds into the start up it just turn off, any ideas why?
I didnt have any thermal paste handy so I just popped my cooler back on with the very little that was left on it, so is it an overheating issue do you think?

Not using fresh thermal paste certainly might have something to do with it.

I'll pop down to bussens and get some, maybe a new cooler too, anychance it might be another problem? Psu not enough umph? motherboard incapability, it recognises the chip on the POST and it is definately a 775 socket as its a celeron, im confused

Certainly check the CPU support list for your board, may need a BIOS flash etc.

The processor is lapped if that is anyhting to do with it?

All sorted, new cooler cost me £8 and job's a goodun
