I've ran loads of cat5e all over my house whilst undertaking other work that involved lifting floorboards and going under the house.
I've now got shed loads of cables in my Utility Room ready to do something with. So I'm thinking of buying a smallish Cabinet (perhaps something like a 4U?, I have no idea), a 16 port Switch (Procurve 1410-16G) and 2 x 24 port patch panels (I've installed loads of points).
Does this sound about right, I suppose I'm really looking for a guide to setting it all up properly and in a neat manner, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks :)

Depends how much kit is going on the end of the cables. For the average home patch panels, small cab (bigger than 4U probably 6U+ cos it vanishes fast), a bunch of 0.3m patch leads and some appropriate length fly leads.

There's not much to it really. You've done all the hard work running the cables.

Ok thanks, and in the cabinet does the patch panel generally go at the top or bottom?
I've bought the punchdown tools etc and tester so am good to go at terminating the ends.
