Hi all

I'm building a new rig mainly for gaming because my old MOBO has died and could do with some advice. Here's what I have decided on so far.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail £146.86

Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £117.49

RAM - ?????????????

Grapics Card - an 8800GT of some sort - suggestions please

HD - planning to use an old IDE Hitachi 160GB one for the time being before upgrading to a Western Digital Caviar 500GB

Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case £72.84

Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK) £88.11

A couple of questions about the MOBO -
1. I have an old IDE HD and DVD ROM but I can't see any IDE sockets - are there any??
2. Is abit a reputable brand - I havn't heard much of them??
3. Which RAM should I get with this?? I want at least 2GB but I may upgrade to Vista this year so I want the ability to upgrade to 4GB - should I get a 2x2GB kit and just leave out one of the sticks for the time being??

Any other comments or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks ;)

In answer to your other queries :-
1.One
2.Abit are a reputable make
3. ? - not sure myself : I'll leave to others to advise.

Get the Point Of View 8800GT, i think that one is the cheapest 512mb and it has good reviews.
With a wolfdale i think you are ok to get a set of 8500 ram, but it is expensive. You could get a 4gb kit of DDR2 6400 Ram, it is a lot cheaper to get a 2x2gb set in 6400 than 8500.

Wipe - I really wanted a 4GB set and that's only 2GB.

Does anyone see any compatability issues with the hardware??

My mouse finger is getting twitchy over the BUY button.

If I stick 4GB in with my XP 32-bit, will it be unstable or can it safely use 3GB or whatever????

depends if you plan to overclock and how much, if you want to get the most out of the 8400 then get 2gb of the 8500 memory.

If you put in 4gb you'll get to use 3.25/3.5Gb, i'm running 4gb on winxp home without any issues.

i've run 8500 memory, running faster than ddr2 800 specs, in an old gigabyte motherboard before without any issues.

Cannot see that it would be an obvious problem, maybe worth posting in the mobo forum to confirm it will not be an issue for peace of mind.
