To start with, what I know about digital cameras can be written on the back of a postage stamp so can any advice be written in "dumb persons" terms please :o

I am basically after a small digital camera for general going out/trips out photos.
I am possibly interested in expanding my knowledge on how to use digital cameras for more "arty" shots but where I'm at beginners level anyway, I feel that until I understand more, there isn't much point getting a Semi-Professional / Prosumer level camera yet - I don't even know if I like photography that much and I may end up only using it as I previously described.

I have narrowed down my options to 4 that I really like and was wondering if people could give me some views/experiences/recomendations on them (my max budget is £200):
Samsung Digimax A7 7MP
Nikon Coolpix 5600 5MP
Polaroid M536 5MP
Vivitar V8300S 8.1MP

I seem more drawn to the Samsung and the Vivitar due to how they look (I'm female - I'm allowed to be shallow :p ) but I'm really after advice on all of them.

Thanks for any help

does this budget include batteries, case and memory?
if so, we need to look at cameras around the £150 really

No it doesn't - the £200 is just for the camera although of the ones above I have found:

Vivitar at £190 inc rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, case and 64Mb SD memory card
Polaroid at £180 inc camera pouch, wrist strap, Lithium rechargeable battery and mains charger and 32Mb internal memory
Nikon at £170 inc batteries and 14Mb internal memory
Samsung at £165 inc 32Mb internal memory

This is just going by whats listed on the website for example I have no idea what batteries the Samsung takes as it has no mention of them in the description

Out of those you have listed I'd buy the Nikon. Defo stay away from that Vivitar.

Also consider the Fuji F10 (or F11 if you can push that far).

Also look at the Panasonic range. :)

The Nikon is essentially a slightly larger, slightly lower resolution (read : almost identical) camera to my Nikon Coolpix 7900 - which is a great camera for travel // family snaps and the like, but is also the camera that got me "into" photography. So it seems to suit your needs nicely :)

Thanks for the replies - I was actually kinda worried about posting this in case I got laughed at for not knowing anything :o

I'd like to leave the thread going as I'm not likely to have the money for the camera until April so that'll mean hopefully others may reply with comments/ideas/suggestions.

I've had a fiddle with a 5600, and I found it to be a very easy to use competant camera, that gives pretty damn good results.

Today we went window shopping for bookcases and I ended up impulse buying the Fuji F10.

It was reduced down to £190 from its normal £230 and I was meant to get some free software with it. When I asked where the software was the guy hunted thru the box, announced he couldn't find it and that the memory card was also not in the box and then wandered off to see what he could find out.

I ended up getting a free 64mb card as that was the smallest they had in stock and some cheap software (Printshop deluxe) which I'm thinking of trying to sell to work.
When I got home I emptied the camera stuff out and found the 16mb memory card that was meant to come with the camera - nice observant sales bloke had managed to ignore it.

Just got to get a case and maybe a spare battery and I'm all set.

Thank you for your opinions guys - I am now one very happy Sam :)

*Ahh snow...wanders off to play with her new camera...* :D
