Hi guys

Been to look at a car today (Honda Accord '58 2.2 iDECT ES GT); 40k on the clock but I have concerns it is really overpriced.

I have looked on Parkers and the price for an Approved Dealer is £11,200 tops. This dealer is after £12995. How accurate is Parkers? I have printed off the pages for 08 '58 plates and 09 '58 plates with all the bells and whistles and can't get the value above £11,200.

They are also trying to flog me GAP insurance at £400 and LifeShine at £400 which I think is a joke. I would love some recommendations on other GAP providers please and any detailers out there who would treat the car for considerably less.

From those of you with experience of haggling, do you reckon I can get the dealer much closer to the Parkers valuation?

Incidentally they did offer an extra year (taking it to 2 years) warranty and 6 months road tax but can't see that being worth 2k.

Some guidance would be most welcome as it is 11 years since I last bought a car and didn't exactly strike a bargain then! :)

Thanks guys

Appreciate the advice guys, I really do.

I have tried CAP too and their top end was £11,300. It is still way below the asking price.

@Fox - I have had my last Honda since 2002 and really have enjoyed it as a car and found it very reliable. I have test driven this car today and can certainly see me doing the miles in it that I have to do in my job. Out of curiosity what would you think it is worth? Auto trader vehicles are all of a similar value but this one is substantially more.

Overall from a haggling point of view though; what do you think my chances are of getting them right down below £11,500? I am ready to walk away now that I know the value is so very much more.

IS this the only one on sale in the country? Are the dealers that confident that they will shift the car quickly?

Tell them your concern. Its their job to seel the car, be prepared to walk away. Offer 11k. Tell them that if they don't like the sound of that you will keep looking, but when they change their mind, they have your number.

GAP insurance is not worth the paper its printed on as it will be written in such a way that you would never meet the criteria and as for life shine, I can sell you the package that the valeters are given for £17 and I would still make a profit.

Sounds a lot like carsupermarket to me.

A quick search on Autotrader and the same car with fsh, starts at just under £10k. That car is too expensive. I wouldn't pay more than £11k.

Thanks so much for the input guys it confirmed my concerns. I had certainly been prepared to walk away and now have plenty of evidence to do so.

As a monetary value, in your opinion what do you think an extra 12 month on the warranty is worth?

Not car supermarket by the way; this is a main Honda dealership :(

If even £500 - from memory Honda do a +1 years warranty and 3 years service pack for 600

So as you say, walk away tell them the price you want and play the waiting game/ wait for sensibly priced cars

It is clearly overpriced, but if you want it you buy it at whatever price you can agree, if you find the price is too high, walk away. It really is that simple. Buying from a main dealer, they will always have you by the knackers.
