Evening all, ok this might sound like a stupid thing to ask and i've checked a lot of posts on the matter but they really dont explain this to me. I'm stuck on which windows to install (xp64 pro/win764 ultimate) my rig isnt the best rig out there matter of fact its quite old now and i wont be upgrading for atleast a year or 2.

sys specs - intelcore2quad q8400 3.2, 8gb kingston hyperx ddr2, ati 5580

all ill be using my pc for is pure gaming/downloading/web browsing. So ill be needing which ever windows fits this criteria best regardless off looks or fancie features. Also how would i go about partitioning my hdd for best performance (1tb).

Thanks for reading and hope you guys who know a lot more than me can shine some light on this.

Windows7 x64 all the way WinXP x64's driver support is very poor!

Purchace Win7 Home Premium x64 RETAIL and you will be able to use the Licence again on your new PC.

Personally I would Split the Drive in to three sections Roughly 200Gb each Giving each a lable of Windows Storage and Music/Films.

Hope that helps.

I'd say go with Windows 7 x64, why go with XP when you can go with Windows 7? Also, Windows XP doesn't support Directx 11 which I'm guessing you'll want for gaming.

If you want to partition your drive, you can partition it through
Computer Management --> Disk Management --> Shrink the Volume --> Pick the size you want for your partition --> Create a new simple volume

^^That's from the top of my head, although it's quite similar to that and I've used it to partition my drives before. There should be a tutorial out there somewhere to do it.

I'd then partition the drives so you'd have 150GB for the OS, 100GB for Games and the rest for media.

thanks for the replies guys but isnt windows 7 a resource hog? and im not to fussed about dx11 as i only play cs/lol/wow and thats all i will be playing.

I honestly don't think it is as much of a resource hogging monster as what most people think. I can easily run my laptop on it and have enough resources to run Firefox, Photoshop and Dreamweaver on it at the same time.

Also, a few years back I used to play BF2142; I played it on Windows Vista and it ran fine, I played it on Windows 7 and it ran perfectly.

To answer your question:
No, I don't think it's a resource hog.

Why have 8Gb of ram if it does not get used?

win7 pro here with 4Gb of ram and a Quad core CPU, 13days of uptime and only 47% of ram is inuse, and CPU usage fluctuates between 0-5% at Idle thats with 70 processes running, Playing Games Like Batman:AA, World Of Tanks, BF:BC2 and not once has my RAM been maxed.

Win7 is a better use of resources and manages the system 1000x better than ANY Microsoft OS to date.

I've got it installed on a Dual core Pentium D Down in the Study (my house mates PC) with only 2Gb of Ram and its loads quicker than Vista ever was and smoother than XP.
