Hi, I am after some solid advice. I'm looking to upgrade my Rig but have no idea where to start. Have a couple of hundred quid to blow on it, was wondering where my money would be best spent.

AMD athlon II x4 640 processor ~3.0gz
ASUS GTX 460
4GB DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
600w psu

Thanks in advance

What motherboard do you have?

What case is it?

What is the make and model of the PSU?

What do you use this PC for?

Yeah sorry for not giving all the info,

Corsair cx 600 psu
Antec 300 Gaming Case
Motherbored is an Asus, amd. model m4a78lt-m

Pure gaming machine

thanks

Hi Burzy - I am a rookie PC builder but here's a reply.

Okay you have a good case and a powerful PSU, most games use 2 cores so your CPU is not bad at all.

Ok of lesser priority what about adding 4GB of matched memory - the max on your board is 8gb - I assume that you have a 64-bit OS (if not don't increase it). The 1600MHz is superb you don't need any thing faster than that.

Sell you graphics card to a mate and use your resources to buy a new one.

For example:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-042-HS&tool=3
You get 3 cracking games with this bad boy - you just need to make sure if fits in your case!

That is about £20 and £220 respectively for your upgrade in gaming goodness.

Now when you change platform - say i3 or i5 and a new motherboard in the future - you can use the new kit (memory and gfx card) in the new rig.

Cheers pod

For pure gaming I'd spend the money on a better graphics card. (monitor resolution depending) And get rid of the Antec 300. (not a fan)
Something like:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL DEAL** £149.99
1 x BitFenix Shinobi Gaming Case - Black **BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL DEAL** £39.98
Total : £204.07 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Then maybe grab 3 x 120mm fans, 1 for the front and 2 for the roof. You will see then a decent drop in temps then.

Or you could go pure graphics card:
YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £239.99
or
YOUR BASKET
1 x HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X PLUS Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **Supplied with Battlefield 3, Dirt 3 & Deus Ex PC Games** £215.99

It will give you a decent boost in games. Then save until April when Ivy Bridge comes out to swap your motherboard and CPU.

460 Vs 560Ti
460 Vs 570
460 Vs 6950

Thanks for the advice jpod and Robbie.

Think i am going to go for a stright graphics card upgrade. It seems the simple option and if it gives the best boost its a winwin.

Thanks all
