im looking to put my vtx3d 7870 under water and i know u cant get a full cover block for this card so ive decided on the xspc raystorm universal GPU block.

now after having a very close look at my card ive noticed that the ram chips aren't physically cooled by the heatsink and what i believe are the vrm have there own aluminium heatsink also not physically cooled by the heatsink either.

so if i put the universal gpu block on and leave the aluminium vrm heatsink on do i need anymore passive cooling for ram chips etc???

thnx to anyone who can help in advance

Though they may not be touching the main heatsink, if your trading your cooler out for a universal cooler, there will be a severe lack of airflow. I dont know whether a 7870 will be okay without any airflow over long periods of time since i cant find how hot they run, but i expect the most effective way to cool it down would be to direct a fan at the card (like one of those pci slot fan's). If your water cooling's purpose to reduce noise, then scrap the fan idea and go for the heatsinks!

To be honest ive seen people run loads of cards on just universal blocks without RAM sinks, but they are usually low power consumption cards.

If you put a universal block on the card then i would run a small fan over the vrms,

does none of the other blocks that do cool the vrms not interest you?
