Hi,

Thinking about taking my son (aged 14) to see the F1 GP at Silverstone in July. Want to go for the full three days ie Fri/Sa/Sun.

Looking for some tips on what type of ticket to get, best place to buy tickets, best place to watch on each day, best place to stay (want to camp) and things to do when there is no action on the track.

Budget for the whole weekend will be circa £1,000.

Cheers,

CH

Hi Snubber,

I went last year for the three days and camped at Whittlebury Park (there will be camping info for the event on their website nearer the time). Its quite a big place to camp and has reasonable facilities but depends what you're used to when camping. The good thing is that it backs onto the circuit, so you can walk through directly which was great. Some of the drivers stay at the hotel, so each evening about 8-10pm you can sometimes catch them arriving back and can speak to them / get autographs.

We had grandstand tickets for Luffield B, which has a view of the cars as they approach from under the bridge from the new Arena section towards you, and into the final complex and away towards to the finish (although the start/finish is moving next year).

On the Friday and Saturday you can more or less sit anywhere and in most grandstands. The ticket you buy only guarantees you a seat for the race itself, so it is a good chance to view the action from other parts. On the Saturday we sat in the new Arena section which is good but I think Luffield is better.

We bought the tickets direct on the F1.com website. I'm not aware of places cheaper unless you have a package deal with a coach ride or something.

There is track action most the time, with GP qually/races and other Forumlas driving.

Lots of places to get food and flags etc at the event (pricey as expected), although the Sunday is very busy all round so best to either buy early or take something with you.

OK...looked at ticket pricing and it seems that a 3 day Gold ticket at Luffield B (covered) is the best bet. £269 adult and £135 child.

Whittlebury Park looks ideal for the tent!

Can't wait.

Cheers.

Hello Snubber,

I can't comment on the camping but I have been to Silverstone for the GP five times and sat at different locations each time. Luffield is a good spot and you'll both have very good views of the race. There is quite a good chance of overtaking due to the corners. Because the new pit straight is going to be on a different part of the circuit these tickets are a little cheaper than they used to be.

Personally, I think for your first time you can't go wrong with the view, atmosphere and price of these tickets. Enjoy

Ive been to Silverstone for 4 races over the last 6 years. We used to Sit at Club when it was still just a bank and it was great, but there is almost nowhere left for general admission any more.

Sat near Duke in Luffield B this year and its a good spot. Woodcote A is the next grandstand along and is just as good. I'd go for eaither of those.

If your going for 3 days a grandstand gets you a reserved seat on Sunday, but a roaming pass Friday and Saturday so you can go anywhere. Spend Friday walking the whole track, sit everywhere you can, and get a feel for it. Then on Saturday pick out some good sports to sit for the support races and qualifying.

There is pleanty to do around the track, pleanty going on, pleanty of places to spend money, but also the track is always busy with a number of support race series going on too (I'd definately recomend watching the GP2 races).

I havent camped for the F1, weve drievn up previous years but I wouldnt recomend it (although from Plymouth its not really possible for you). This year though we stayed in a Travelodge about 20 miles away near Milton Keynes. Was the closest place that wasnt charging stupid money, and its nice to have a proper bed and a shower. Just get car parking and drive to the circuit. The whole dual carridgeway to the track is made 1 way over the weekend so traffic isnt that bad. Having spent 3 days at Spa in a Motorhome, id definately recomend a Travelodge if you fancy sleeping, but camp if you want to jump into the atmosphere of it all, but dont mind Finnish Thrash Metal played all night from a neaighbouring tent :).

Bottom line, its a great weekend and you will love it. The atmosphere is fantastic (especially if the Brits do well). Pleanty of us on here have been if you have any specific questions.
