Advice needed: Replacing 8800GTX

Hi guys

Just a after a bit of advice on replacing my gfx card. My OcUK 8800GTX has given up the ghost and having had it since dec '07 it is now out of warranty.

I need to find a half decent replacement which would hopefully perform just as well - but - I'm kind of limited to £100 max on spend.

CPU is a stock running E6750 (4gb mem) and these days I tend to only mess about on WoW, although I do run it on my LCD TV at 19020 x 1080 resolution with everything on high.

I've been very happy with nVidia in the past and was considering the XFX GTS 250 (although it seems out of stock atm). Not sure how the 250 compares against the 8800.

I'm not sure if there is anything better for the same money that ATi can offer up as I've kind of lost track with the pc hardware scene since taking on the responsibility of becoming a single father (hence the £100 limit!).

Anyway, appreciate any advice you guys can offer up.

Thanks in advance

Get the cheapest 4850 you can find. Its better than 8800gtx. Another good choice would be the 4770, its about 10% slower than 4850 but should be about 20-25 cheaper if you shop around.

if you go higher up, only go for 1GB cards (4870\4890 or gtx260-216)

best bet would be the 4850 though ^_^

Thanks for the heads up guys.

I see that people seem to be favouring ATi these days, I can only assume they have come a long way, especially regarding their drivers?

@95thrifles - from your comment I'm assuming you are referring to this product: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-100-HT ?

I have about £15 sat on quidco and maybe a fiver in my paypal account so I might be able to raise it a little (I assume there will be postage on top of the price?).

Is that card a major step change from a 4850? If it is I may consider going for it, I do after all enjoy a run through COD4 (still the best fps game ever :)) and though I haven't played it in a while, the time may come when I fancy going through Crysis again.

For the sake of 'future-proofing' at a cost of twenty quid I suppose I'd be daft not to.

not a massive step up to be fair, you can have a look at a comparison for yourself, its WaW rather than MW but I believe theyre the same engine and everything so should still be pretty accurate. Whilst both cards are near the bottom and frames per second are only around 25-30 dont forget thats at maxed settings at stupidly high res

As for the drivers, i never had a problem with them so far. I used the X800 series, albeit a long time after release, 3850 and now the 4870.

though i did hear that crossfire users get the problems usually (2 gpus+).

what res are you gaming on anyway? If its less than 1920x1200 then the 512mb ram may not be that bad...
