Hey everyone
I'm experiencing some very odd problems with my PC. Up until now, it has been absolutely flawless. About a week and a half ago I upgraded the PSU to an EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850w modular (might not be related to my issues but worth mentioning) to enable me to run two Radeon 7950s in CF, and this past weekend my PC has started to do really odd things. I first noticed it when I loaded into Windows on Saturday. My Corsair Vengeance H1500 USB headset all of a sudden made some really loud buzzing noises when plugged in when Windows played the login sounds. I unplugged it from the back of my PC and plugged it back in but it still did it when playing sound, so I changed to a different USB port. This solved the issue. The next time I restarted my PC, the keyboard and mouse wouldn't work. They've been plugged into the same topmost (next to the PS2 ports) USB ports since I built the PC years ago. I couldn't get them to work in those ports, so I tried the others. Only the 3rd set down of USB ports on my motherboard's rear panel (a Gigabyte Z77X UD3H) worked. I used the PC as normal and it was ok after that.
Then when I switched my PC on again later on Saturday evening, the keyboard wasn't working, the mouse was, and the headset was ok too. So I figured there must be something up so I updated the chipset and USB drivers on the board from Gigabyte's website. I then had the same trouble with the keyboard and mouse. They stopped working in the ports they were in, and I had to move them around to get them to work. This time they worked in the 2nd set of USB ports on the rear panel of the motherboard. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest release available on Gigabyte's site but still had issues. I got them working again by moving things around at the back.
Now tonight, I upgraded to the latest build of Windows 10 to see if this would help but it hasn't made any difference. I tried to log in after the upgrade but both the keyboard and the mouse stopped working again. So I thought I'd upgrade the Logitech keyboard and mouse software, but after a reboot, all three devices wouldn't work, and for some unknown reason my second 7950 wouldn't start according to Device Manager. Also, under System in Device Manager, one of the High Definition Audio Bus entries was disabled, but this is attached to the 7950 that didn't start so that makes sense. I removed this item, my headset, and the keyboard and mouse and redetected. I restarted the PC and disabled USB3.0 in the BIOS to see what that did, but the mouse stopped working after I rebooted. I restarted the PC again and all worked after that, and since then the next reboot was ok as well.
The weird thing is, the keyboard and mouse light up the whole way through booting up, but when you get to the Windows startup screen, they flash off, and then back on again (I have a G15 KB so the keys light up) but Num Lock is stuck on, and if you move it to one of the other ports that it won't work in, it doesn't light up again after that. It's all very unusual. I can't decide whether the motherboard is failing, or if the new PSU is at the heart of these strange issues. My old PSU was a 650W and I didn't have any problems in the two years I used it, but I wasn't running CF at that point. The second card wasn't even powered on because I tried it once and there wasn't enough power, so after that I left the power cables unplugged.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I wanted to make this as comprehensive as possible. I hope that someone out there has had similar issues and has been able to resolve them. I'm interested to see what people's thoughts on this are. Does anyone have any idea what on earth is going on with my PC? Thanks for reading!
