Advice needed : whats the best : ASUS RT-AC5300 or RT-AC88U ?????

There both very similar, the main differences are
the rt-ac88u has 8 lan ports vs 4 for the rt-ac5300
The rt-ac88u has 1 x 2.4ghz and 1 x 5ghz radio vs 1 x 2.4ghz and 2 x 5ghz for the rt-ac5300
Which ones best thus depends on your requirements. If you have lots of wireless devices being used at once the rt-ac5300 will have more throughput as it has three radios. if more lan ports are important to you then the rt-ac88u is a good option.
Apart from the differences i've highlighted they both have the same internal components, both use broadcom soc's with dual core arm a9 1.4ghz cpus and 512mb of ram.
I think i recall there being a non rog router being released identical to the rt-ac88u but without the extra 4 lan ports (thinks it was named rt-ac3100) and will likely be cheaper than the rt-ac88u.

Thanks for the information mate, being use to the 68u the router is awesome apart from one thing, it was to easy to fill up all the lan ports lol the wireless range on the 68u is fantastic for my house as every area in it has a great wireless signal....
so the best of the bunch or should i say the best for me would probably be to go for the 88u.......
+ the router will be better in every way compared to my 68u and there is another + this 88u is compatible with merlin firmware so another +
yeah think im going to go for the 88u
I could buy a switch but im getting the itch to replace the dsl_ac68u for something better

They've got a review of both the routers you've mentioned. Probably worth a read before buying but i think the rt-ac88u is a good choice. Asus in my opinion have the best firmware of all the consumer router manufacturers, especially the new bandwidth history breakdowns of not only machines use but also applications used to.

How you getting on with your new router? is it better than the previous model?any issues? am on virgin media and have the super hub 2 been looking to get better router and just stick the hub in modem mode.

and gets even better when you stick on merlins latest beta 1 firmware.

i have yet to test tomato or other enhanced firmwares on it
differences from my old router are better wireless range...
looks way better has 4 more gigabit lan ports over the 4 on 68U
has WTFast VPN support for better international pings and more stable connections though i have yet to test this feature.
QOS has been enhanced...

what can i say, the router is better in every way over my old 68U
the only reason why i upgraded was for the addedd fact i have never seen a router with 8 lan ports before + i was runnin out of lanports for my 68U you might say getting a switch would be cheaper and yes it would but i wanted a router that i wont upgrade again for at least 2 years so this beast is great for my needs....
on a side not about the routers temps.... its pretty hot, @76c as merlins firmware reports your cpu temps and wirless 2.4 and 5ghz chip temps.
though i have been told from merlin and people on his forums that these routers run hot, its there nature and are ment to run that hot so dont go compaireing them to cpu temps different architecture ect ect.....
i will point out though the router looks well great, has that lambo aviator vibe and looks like a mean piece of kit, if people are worried though they should not about the temps, you can always buy a cheap labtop usb cooler to sit the router on
