Hi,

So it's time for me to get a new PC to replace an ageing Mac Mini. I'm planning to do this by building a new Windows machine, but it's been many years since I last built a PC and I'd appreciate some help...

I'm after something fairly small and quiet with a decent amount of power, but I don't do any gaming or need to be able to overclock, etc.

Most of my use of the machine will be for general media use, home server use (DLNA server, etc) and photo editing (Lightroom).

I'm planning to use an existing Windows 7 licence and to use a 3.5" HDD that I already own for my main data storage with an external USB3 HDD for local backup.

I need to connect to an existing monitor that supports DVI or HDMI and runs at 1920 x 1080.

So with that in mind please can anyone help me validate the kit list below or offer any better alternatives?

Is there anything I have missed here - do I need a CPU heatsink / fan or any cables?

Thanks in advance.

Is this going to be quiet?

Great selection if kit, I would however change for some faster RAM and save some cash.

You may also want to get a small/low profile cooler as the stocks can be noisy. All cables will come with the motherboard and case. The case will come with a 200mm and a 120mm fan which can be connected to the motherboard.

Other than that it looks good.

It's all subjective of course, but the Prodigy can be surprisingly big - it's quite a wide case. See if you can see one to decide if it meets your definition of fairly small before buying.

Hi,

Thanks - I have been thinking about that and may look at re-thinking this as an ITX project with a smaller case. I've also got distracted looking at NUC units too...
