Hey guys, I'm looking to go to HK in August and very keen on buying an DSLR to take with me there. I've been having a look around and the Canon 600D has caught my eye for a starter camera, have found one which comes with a 18-55mm IS lens for £499. I thought i'd ask for your opinion first on what you'd recommend as a basic starter kit? The idea is to get one ASAP (this weekend perhaps) leaving me more than enough time to familiarize myself with it all.

Any thoughts welcome :)

£499 for a 600D seems extremely expensive to me it can be from Amazon for £389.95 with 18-55mm IS lens.

It also may be worth looking at the Nikon D3200 which has a very similar spec with a slightly higher resolution sensor and is slightly cheaper.
Either of them are perfect for a starter DSLR and offer exactly the same image quality as the more expensive and advanced models.

The only other thing to consider is second hand, some people just aren't interested and thats fair enough but you can save a lot of money and 4-500 would get you a decent semi pro body second hand or an entry level camera with some money left over for toys.

Your doing the right thing in buying early as the more time you have to practice and ge used to the camera before your trip the better. Enjoy yourself and don't be afraid to share the results and ask questions no matter how silly they seem.

Nikon D5200 is a bargain and the nikon D7000 is an amazing camera. On the canon side the entry models are all much the same. I would look at a used canon 450D or 500D on the canon side.

Thanks for all the advice guys, and indeed £389 is much cheaper, I actually misread the price, i've seen it for £399 which seems more sensible.

As for the recommendations for a 450/500d or a second hand, ideally I want something that sits in the middle in terms of features, one of the reasons I'm thinking about the 600d as it's got 1080p HD recording too.
