Hi all

I'm concidering buying a tablet, and being a through and through pc man, I'm somewhat out of my zone looking at these. What I'm looking for is this:

9-10" screen of a decent quality, something to watch films on, play the odd game and let my daughter play with, so clearly needs good scratch resistance qualities, as well as fairly fast hardware

I don't want to be dictated by the machine what software is loaded, like what you buy a phone and it has vodaphone apps and bookmarks that can't be removed (does this count out things like samsung tablets?)

So what are the OCUK tablets like, do they make them or are they just rebranded machines from China...

Is it worth buying a samsung or am I just paying for the label?

Money isn't a major issue here, but if the OCUK Ultima V2 at £139 was good I'd rather pay that than £250!

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!

TT

I think the OcUK tablet are most likely China tablets rebranded...however IMO if the quality of the parts used for them are decent, I think it matters very little. And with OcUK confident enough on selling them and provide warranty cover for it, I think it makes some sort of statements already...it certainly beat a overpriced Apple product crap out on you after the 1st year, and then you are on your own (if you didn't pay the Apple Care premiums), as replacing it won't cost an arm and a leg.

The general opinions toward these tablets seem positive, but of course like all products, some people do receive faulty goods which require sending back for replacement or refund (hell, just think of the first batch of the problematic Samsung Galaxy S4, or the Apple 4...or was it 4s(?) at initial launch). But do bare in mind user experience can be a subjective thing...one person may love it, the other might hate it.

Best bet is probably get the tablet and thoroughly test and use it yourself within the first two weeks, and if you are not happy with it, you can just return to OcUK for a refund (but you would have to pay for return postage).

What about the so called bloatware? Are samsungs loaded with this stuff?

Any knowelage about scratch resistance or indeed if Samsung have some magical coating over the non branded?

I just can't see what I'm paying the extra £100 for?

Most Samsung mobile devices (Smartphone, Tablet,Laptops, external HDD) would come with bloatware and take up storage space, which you might need to flush out yourself. As for the price premium on the Samsung, they DO use faster CPU etc, better quality and more durable parts, which go inline with their price tags; Apple on the other hand have more than half the money went to their brand name, with corners cut with slower hardware and uses less durable material (i.e. if you dropped a Galaxy phone, the chances are it will dent the corner a bit...whereas iphone, you will get big cracks across the back/front surface area.)

To be honest I wouldn't expect the OcUK units to be as durable as the Samsungs, but I won't expect myself to be careless enough to drop it or drop things on it. It is what it is at the end of the day...a budget tablet. It won't "beat" the Samsung Tab or the Ipad for less money, but that doesn't mean they ain't good enough as substitute.

Although not 10", I reccomend the android based Nexus 7.

Fantastic build quality, responsive, and no apple 'lock-down', just grab a decent case for it and a screen protector, and let your daughter go nuts, being 7" it may be better suited for the smaller hands too! :)

I have a Nexus 7 and an Asus Transformer but was messing with my Dads Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 10.1" IPS 16GB he had from OCUK and I can't fault it.

The Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 2 quad-core is now available sub-£200.00, and I find it really fast. The digitizer screen (the touch screen) is made of glass, so is scratch-resistant. In all I can't fault it, although I can't find spores for it at the moment
