Advice: New Hybrid Bike £500-£750

Amateur but rate my Boardman HYB 8.8 which should come in at the top of that budget range. Fairly light, good on and off road and survived me ragging the **** out of it in the 1st year :D.

Thanks Doodah. Looks like a nice bike. There reviews are saying that' it's really easy to mark the paint? Not sure if that's something you have experienced. Thanks for the heads up ☺️

Hhhhmm hadn't thought much about it, I have definitely taken some off but that's because I have knocked/scuffed/dropped the bike. I'll take a pic of what it looks like 1.5 years after purchase (>5,500 miles) tomorrow if you want :). But I wouldn't say it's an issue. It's my first bike as an adult and I went for it because of its relative lightweight (carbon forks), disc brakes and it's a 1-by for gears so more simple.

Hi All, Looking for some advice on a new hybrid bike. Been out of the loop for a while and there are so many options. Was thinking of going for a Cannondale as they typically tend to be tried and tested... But would love some suggestions.. thank you!

The Boardman that @doodah suggested is better than the Quick 6, but it's £800 which is same money as Cannondale Quick 3 - so carbon forks and disc brakes etc. Always best to 'ride-before-you-buy' as well (if possible)

Does it have to have flat bars?

This is a bargain - https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBPXLDNRDSA1/planet-x-london-road-sram-apex-1-disc-road-bike

Will do you well on the road and a bit of gravel.

Thanks PapaLazaru - Do you think this road bike would perform as well as a hybrid? It looks like a great deal, although not something I would have typically looked at. Thanks a bunch :)

** Would it be crazy to go the above bike but have flat handle bars put on instead>?

It's a great bit of kit for the money, in fact after doing a load of research I had already ordered one, albeit the beefed up 'gravel' version. I expect you could run it with flat bars, but you would also need to change the brake levers. The drop bars will just give you more flexibility for longer rides.

I used to ride a flat bar MTB with slim tyres when I lived in a town centre, but ended up cutting the length of the bar shorter as for around town, I felt they were too wide. Essentially the width of a drop bar anyway. Oh and I converted it to single speed as there were very few hills.

Q1 - yes it will perform as well as a hybrid and will hold value a bit better
Q2 - yes is would be crazy to flat bars. Flippantly - if you are over 70 then get a hybrid. Otherwise look much cooler on a drop bar bike plus they offer more comfort for hands on longer rides due to multitude of riding positions
