Its time that my old system is replaced by a more up to date one. This is my first time building a pc from scratch and I would like a bit of advice from the 'been there done that' guys.

First of all im sitting on a rough budget, estimated at about 1000 +-100

I have come up with a build that is around my proposed budget. I mainly use the pc for gaming. Still not sure about the case, it seems good but I also quite like the Silverstone Raven2.

So here is my item list -

Case - Tempest Evo - £80
PSU - CiT 550W - N/A
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R - £157
CPU - i7 920 D0 - £167
GFX - 1gb 5870 - £324
Memory - 6gb Geil Black Dragon (1600MHz) - £150
HDD - WD Black Caviar 640gb - £55
Cooling - Corsair H50 - £60

Total - £993

I could possibly drop the GFX card down a notch. In the future I am looking to watercool the system and to crossfire another GFX card in. Any advice or suggestions would be great!

Cheers

never underestimate the value of a good PSU in an enthusiast system, definitely get a t least a CORSAIR HX650 or Antec TP650

Very similar to my system, though I've got a different case and PSU (both Corsair) - everything else is the same and it works a treat.
I got the Powercolor 5870 pcs+ as it runs cooler and quieter than the standard cards, if you're not so worried about that then maybe a reference 5850 is worth considering.

drop the 5870 for a 5850.

then get a psu from a trusted manufacturer

+1 my friend has recently purchased the 5870 and i have a 5850. The difference is almost shockingly unrecognisable! It is quite worrying although my friend is crying now that he didnt get any extra performance. I am sure that this is just repeating what the other guys have said but one thing you never want to mess around with is a PSU.

Cheers for the heads up on the PSU

Mine blew the other day so I had to go out and get a new one for my current system. Thought I might get by on it, obviously not :p

Will probs drop the cards down to a 5850 seeing as the difference is pretty minimal.

Thanks
