Advice on a new CPU

First time posting here! \o/

*Ahem*

I'm shortly looking to upgrade my CPU, as after an series of unfortunate events my computer was knackered and the repairs ended up with my 2.2quad Phenom turning into a 2.0 dual Intel something-or-other, and more or less everything being downgraded.

I've slowly rebuilt it to it's former glory, except the CPU and motherboard.

In short, I have very little idea about Intel, and need advice on which socket-775 CPU would be a good upgrade choice. Ideally looking for cost between £100-£150.

The rest of my rig is as follows:

Vista Ultimate 32-bit, 1000w PSU, Sapphire HD4850 512mb, 2*2gb OCZ platinum 1033mhz RAM.

All help is appreciated!

As of right now, no, but this upgrade project is a monthly thing using spare income, which is roughly £100 a month.

As extra info my current mobo is a P5N-MX(I think, will check when I get home from work) or something similar, the product specs are here.

I was looking at the Q6600 anyway, as it's a cheap quadcore, and I've heard good things all round about it.

Will look up mobos as well and see how it fits in with the upgrade schedule. ;)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Depends what you want to do with it really. For gaming an E8500 is probably the better choice. If gaming isnt really your thing, then a Q6600.

And damn, your PSU is so overkill for that rig :D

It is for gaming, so I'll keep an eye on them as well.

As for the PSU, yesh, it is overkill, but the way I see it it's also future-proof, if I don't abuse it too much. I got it as part of a custom-built machine when a lump sum of money fell in my lap. Then that custom built machine died, and I'm slowly working my way back up to its level.

Plus the PSU's in a sexy black finish with ubersexy modular design for all-over PSU sexyness.
