Our house needs a new router. We've been using the same modem/router set-up for years upon years and it's slow (max of 512kbps on 20mb broadband) and doesn't cover the whole house. Here's a pic:

Ideally I want a router that can cover the house, plus maybe the garden too, and can get full speed of 2.5mbps. I saw somebody mention the ASUS routers, the RT-N56U and N55U, are they up to the job, or overkill? I don't mind paying that much as long as it works.

Also, would these routers work out of the box with the Virgin modem? Just replace the old one and things will work (after setting up security of course).

Thanks for any help.

The routers you mention receive very good reviews although I don't own one.

Is the 512kbps down speed wired or wireless? If wired it might not be the router that's at fault, you may just have a very poor line.

Do you get these speeds regardless of the time of day and when did the service start crawling to these speeds?

Ok, so its definitely the wifi that is slow, not your wired connection; its not overly clear...

That notwithstanding have you tried swapping channels to rule out interference before you spend your hand earned cash on a shiny new router? :)

Sorry for not being clear, yeah it's the wifi, wired is fine. I doubt it's interference because it's a constant 512kbps max speed, never been higher.
