Have a mate who's still running my old AMD2500 - Geforce4 TI4800SE rig. He wants to upgrade the card only though and after some ideas.

I first thought about a 9800 pro, but would gladly like to hear your comments please.

How much does he have to spend? £50, £100, £150 or £200?

£50, nothing new, but maybe a 6600GT second hand would do the trick (ATi, maybe an X800?)

£100, something like an 6800GT or a X800XT second hand.

£150, 7600GT

£200, x1950 Pro, but be prepared for a little bottlenecking.

about £50 I reckon knowing him. Was thinking 6600GT. Noticed processor is acutally 2400 not 2500. Was trying to get him 9800pro.

What's the performance like on the 6600GT compared to 9800pro and his 4800ti?

A 6600GT is somewhat faster than a 9800pro & that is reasonably faster than a Ti4800SE (really just an AGP8x Ti4400).

I would try to find a 2nd hand 6600GT, X800GT (arround same speed as 6600GT), 9800XT, 9800Pro [256MB if possible].

This is a PCIE card & wouldnt really advise this purchase even if it was AGP.

If you want a new card then for the same sort of performance of the above 2nd hand cards you need something like this ..

yeah couldn't make that out. Showed up under AGP though, assumed wrong literature for it.

9800 Pro out then. 6600GT or X800GT in

it all depends on how many pound notes he is willing to spend, and whether he woudl be happy using well known internet auction systems.

for example, my draling other half (just in case she is reading this) has a 400ti and I got her a 6600 from the bay for a £30 + post, and when it came, it was complete except for one game missing out of the box, and she had a massive performance increase, for a very low price upgrade.

You dont always need to get the latest, greatest hardware to upgrade yoru system

I am in a similar position and for a cheapish card the best options seem to be a 7600GS, or 7300GT. Both are a little quicker than the 6600GT but cheaper and consume less power :) (which might be an issue if the PSU isn't very large, as in my case)

reading now that 7300gt could be next step up? Where does the 6800's, X1300 and X1600 fall?

ok can someone please post cards in order. Getting confused here, hate buying equipment for pc's that aren't mine.

Options

6600GT
7300GT
7600GS
X1300Pro
X1600Pro
X800XL

£70 tops really

Thankyou all

Where the 7300GT is concerned, whether it has DDR2 or DDR3 will influence where it goes on that list. With DDR2, it is faster than 6600GT but slower than 7600GS. With DDR3 it is faster than 7600GS.

You're going to do well to get one of those cards for under £70 new including postage tbh.
