I'm looking to build a new PC for my mum - nothing fancy, just office / web / email / maybe some photo editing. I'm rather out of touch with current hardware, and would like to know what sort of processor & motherboard would be the best choice - perhaps a Sempron?

A motherboard with graphics, sound and LAN onboard would probably be most suitable, I suppose - are the nForce boards still any good? (running an old nForce2 here).

Thanks.

I just built a PC for my mum for the same thing, although not photo editing, she wanted to do some design. (flyers and stuff)

I put together a :

Sempron 2800+ AM2 (comes with HS/Fan)
1Gb DDR2 PC4200 (generic stuff)
Asrock AM2NF4G-SATA2 AM2 microATX (Overclockers do similar ones made by Asus and Gigabyte etc...)
80Gb Sata Hard Disk
DVD RW Drive
Memory Card Slots (could be handy for photo editing)
and A Cheap Micro ATX Case with 420W PSU!

The motherboard has 7.1 audio, Integrated NV44 graphics DX9.0 VGA, Pixel Shader 3.0,which shares 128mb of memory and a PCI-e slot incase you want to upgrade the GFX.

All this cost me under £200 delivered, and I got a mouse and keyboard. Works perfect! Now she wants a TFT though, cause they look pretty!

You might actually be better looking at secondhand systems, the uses you describe will be covered by any PC that is say 1.2ghz, 512mb Ram and up. A new PC will probably cost you more and be overkill but if you want that then what ryansm describes is a good option.
