Thanks,

the E8400 will achieve a higher overclock and is around the same price.

the two extra cores of the Q6600 won't benefit you unless you're doing video encoding etc. so for general needs (gaming etc) a dual core is better ;)

edit: the E8500 is on offer as well, for only a few pounds more. that's the same as the E8400 though, just has a .5 higher multi ;)

ok, so if i change to e8500 ( as its on offer) anything else you think could be improved upon..

basically i am replacing a e6600, dq6 mobo (965 socket) and a EVGA 7950 gfx card. i normally do a full change every 2 years.. how will the spec i have chosen compare.

thanks,

I would stick with qaud core, it's a great price and although it might be a touch slower. it will be much better for multitasking and more future proof. If you do ever start encoding or do anything else which is cpu intensive you'll be so glad you went quad.
The extra couple of 100 mhz isn't worth it imo.

That's one of the problems with specing computers, every one has different prioritys and different opinions.

it's mad to change from an E6600 at rpesent. That spec is more than capable of keeping you going until Nehalem.

If I were you, I'd change your graphics and keep everything else (possibly a new psu if your current one isn't very powerful)

well in that case, i might jst get a new gfx card, up memory to 4gb from 2gb..

i dont want to waste money, but fancied an upgrade as im still on DX9

Remember to check that your mobo can take your card (with regard to pci-e 1, 1.1, 2.0 etc.)
