Hi all

Just upgrading my system from an old amd fx 57 chip which has served me well, but now after going to vista it is time for an upgrade.

So basically I will be buy new:

Processor
Motherboard - if I go intel I don’t have a clue about the MB's recommendation for under £70 would be good
Ram

I cant decide wether to go for an intel Q6600 or E8400 / E8500 which processor do you recommend I mainly play games and a lot of auto cad work.

What are the amd phenom chips like?

You can't really go wrong with a Q6600 or E8400, there are loads of threads about which is best. Don't overlook the E7200 though if you want to save a few pennies, even the E2180 will be a lot faster than your current CPU.

Well I cant comment on a sub £70 Mboard, I have a Q6600 in a Gigabyte DQ6 with four gig of Geil ULL (so cheap now it's laughable). It's rock steady @3.6. All in all a great buy, someone here will prolly know about a cheaper board that clocks well, but as Mr.Wizz said, cant really go wrong with a Q6600.

for a motherbaord, depends if you want to over clock or not.

OC do an EVGA board for £35 which I am sure takes Quad (even has an onboard G.card if you dont have a pci one yet) I have one with my old E6400 cpu on and it runs very nicely.

One flaw is that it only has 2 ddr2 slots. but if you are coming from an old FX set up you probably have agp g.card and ddr1 memmory. which is going to be a lot to replace, so a cheap board like that may be an option to get you going.

Or look around for one of ASrock quad VSTA. Again they are very poor Overclockers but they do take older Dual core or quads and can take AGP or PCI or DDR1 or DDR2 so again a very good option to upgrade slowly.

Of course if you have the wonga to go straight for a full build, on the overclockers sale site, have a read through the reviews on the motherboards, they often answer most of your questions.

For autocad, I'd go for the Q6600 over the 2cores..

As for a <£70 mobo, you'd be best looking at the gigabyte P35-DS3 range

:)

can auto cad definately take advantage of quad core? If not I'd go for the higher clocked 8200.

The top AMD Phenom with the unlocked multiplier is not a bad perfomer. Its performance is neck to neck with Q6600 and can be overclocked by adjusting its multiplier.

That said, when both are overclocked Intel tends to fare better as its overclocking margins are better usually.

So in the end I went for the following parts:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.66 GHz (FSB
1333MHz) Socket 775 L2 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

Asrock 4Core1600Twins-P35 Socket 775 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 1000MHz/PC2-8000 Memory REAPER X EDITION ENHANCED BANDWITH CL5
Qty

Existing hardware:

8800gt ultra

250gb hard drive 16mb 7,200rpm

Cant decide on which of my cpu coolers to use either:

Zalman CNPS9700-LED CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
Titan Vanessa-L TTC-NK25TB/SC (RB) Heatpipe Cooling Fan (462/478/754/939/940/LGA775)

you already bought that stuff?

and for cpu coolers go for a tuniq tower

I would go for the Thermalright Ultra 120 - Extreme and couple it with a Noctua NF-P12. A very cool and quiet combination

If your gonna lap it the its better than a tuniq tower. If you dont wanna lap it i would go with the tuniq, or wait for the artic cooling freezer extreme, which looks awesome.

Yes I have ordered the cpu (retail boxed) - MB and Ram today cost me approx £295 thought that was ok

I only have the zalman cooler and titan vanessa (which is basically the same as the tuniq- that’s what it was compared to in the reviews anyway) sat on the shelf at home think I will use the titan

NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO.

That chip is terrible value for money.
Either spend less and get a chip that performs around the same- A Q6600
or spend more and buy a chip that performes better- Q9450
