Hey, I really need advice on what to look for when choosing a PSU. It's probaly the only thing I don't really know anything about when it comes to building a computer.

I've just ordered some parts for my rig which are as follows:

Asus P8P67 Pro
i7 2600K
Corsair Vengeance 8GB
Asus GTX 580

I already have a 1Tb Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD and a reaaaaaaaaaaally old dvd disc drive all in a Coolermaster HAF X gaming tower (PSU bottom mounted).
The PSU im currently running is a 1000w something but becuase it was a free hand me down from a mate I dont actually know any details about it.

I want to get a new one to replace my old one but have no idea what to look for except the wattage, and even then I don't know what's enough and whats just not needed :S

The only thing I do know I need is something thats quiet and has long cables as the case is huuuuuuge and the cable atm is nowhere near long enough and barely reaches the CPU power point.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated :)

yeah i was looking at them before and was going to order some anyway.

Im not really sure, I guess modular would be handy if I decide to upgrade in the future to something that requires different connections etc But is it worth the money? or is the price even effected by it being modular/non modular? And yeah, I was eventually planning on going down the Sli route with the Asus GTX 580 but no time soon as its just to expensive.

After reading the above best ignore the ones I posted lol but at least you have an idea of what wattage to look for.

Modular tend to be more expensive and tbh I wish I had one makes cable management 100 times easier. Looks better and Increases case airflow due to being tidyer.

lol yeah, i think since its been recommended twice the xfx seems like a good choice. I'll obviously go for the 850w though. Im still going to see how my current psu does with the new parts arrive as I can't afford to replace it for at least another month.

If you can afford it go modular. As nuttyprot says, they are great for cable management, makes life much easier and looks so much better. Some modular PSU aren't totaly modular, some cables are still non-modular, so check first!

Yeah I know that my current one is like that, semi-modular, so I will definatley check before buying
