If anyone has the expertise to advise me on the below, then I shall be much appreciated,

I have a gigabyte UD7 mobo 1366 chipset

Also I have a i7 920 cpu installed.

I want to buy and replace it with an intel i7 950, please can some one tell me if I have to re-install the operating system ?

Can I just do a straight swap ? so i,ll remove the i7 920 and replace with a i7 950 and then switch the computer on without doing anything else?

Is that possible?

Im sure i,ll get a peformance increase? i have a 850 watt psu with 2 x gpu,s

please advise if this is possible..

thank you

Nope, just change the cpu and do a CMOS reset. Hopefully your board should not need a BIOS update.

Have you thought about overclocking your cpu?

+1 for overclocking your 920, yes the 950 has a slightly faster stock speed but it will still only clock to the same level as any other bloomfield chip, ie 920/930.

thanks for the info ! I looked at intel webiste and it shows the i7950 is 20 to 30% quicker?

I really dont know how to overclock, so I thought getting a more powerful cpu will be better in performance?

I have a driver cd which came with my mobo purchase, its got a programme called smart six, with this you can increase the cpu clock speed with a single mouse click, ie a i7 920 from 2.6 to 3.2 but that is the highest, so with the i7 950 im sure you can above 4.0 ?

so do you think there's no point in buying a 950 ? i mean if I dont realise the peformance change then it would be a waste of monies ?

Excellent advice given, thank you

I have had a look at the 950vs920 bench mark and there aint much of a diiference ! in some tests the 920 peforms better ! so I have decided to stick with my 920 and try overclocking, I hope I dont screw things up as this is a new challenge so I will tread carefully !!
