Hi all,

Was just hoping for some advice on my CPU temps, which have not been the best since I built my pc.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9700-LED CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38
Case: Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 Black

According to RealTemp 2.70 my temps under load are:

60 60 57 57

(max: 63, 63, 58, 58 - after having PC on for about 30 minutes or so and in a game).

I guess these are quite high?

I was wondering if it would be worth getting a Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler or something which would have much better results...I also have not overclocked yet, and did want to get at least 3Ghz.

is your heatsink and cpu both flat?

do you care about the warranty on your cpu?

if the answer to both is no, have you considered lapping it?

Well a couple of things i can think of:

- When placing the cpu cooler onto this board, the black bracket which goes on the board only could go one way round (my previous board I could turn it in different ways), so I placed the bracket on the mobo and the way it was positioned, and this made it harder to get the cooler on as i had to press down quite hard to get the screws on. So the cooler was pretty hard to get on, but did go in and its secured flat onto the CPU.

- Could it be a little too much arctic silver paste on the cooler?

Hmm can't exactly remember...but a layer across the cpu...can't really explain how much :) Maybe it needs to be thinner...

Hmmm my PC seems to be freezing now and then too normally after i play for a very long time...i was in-game and then everything froze, then when i rebooted, the PC just stays on the "republic of gamers" screen. I rebooted various times and still the same..i placed the PC on its side, and tried again, with side window open too, then it booted.

Really worrying, i'm not sure exactly what is wrong, but cooling may be an issue...

You don't say the CPU voltage? But if you're at default voltage as well, then yes, that's way too high. For comparison, I'm sticking 1.485V through my Q6600 and seeing the same temps (air-cooled). IIRC, at default voltage the temps were about 10oC lower.

Have everything default at the moment, haven't played with any temps in the BIOS , nothing...maybe the case isn't best for cooling? and maybe go for a say CM cosmos + better CPU cooler? :S

I've actually found the 570 to be a pretty good case, at least as long as you use all three 120mm fans. I don't know about the cooler though, but Zalmans are usually aimed at quiet rather than good. I use a Thermalright Ultra-120A and a Scythe S-Flex 1600rpm fan. I'd try a different cooler before changing case.

If you do get rid of the case though, can I have first dibs on the 570? :p

Yeah maybe Meridian ;)

The thing is...changing the cooler would mean taking out the mobo, to place the correct brackets under the mobo, therefore i might as well place the mobo in a new case.

But its just really bugging me, that this is happening, and i wanted to overclock my CPU to at least 3GHz too, thats the reason i could that CPU, but with these temps, no chance. Also I want to try and stop these freezes happening, they only seem to be quite late at night after a long play too
