Looking for a bit of advice please.....

My elderly father is looking to replace his old desktop.
He never plays games, just general Internet usage, watching YouTube etc.
He does need something that has 4TB SSD storage as he has a huge number of old camcorder tapes, that he's had digitised. He never edits anything.
I'm guessing he can get away with a cpu with onboard gfx?
And if so, what cpu is decently future proof & good value for money atm?
I was thinking maybe one of the AM5 series Ryzen cpu's ?
Thanks.

Yup, no problem. Any AM5 CPU except -F includes integrated graphics (the G CPUs just have stronger graphics). The same applies to any Intel CPU, except -F.

For watching YouTube as the most demanding task? Pretty much anything.

If you wanted to focus on power usage and less on compute, the 8500G is a CPU I like for basic desktop builds.

Review here:

If you wanted to really go for it, a 245K is available for £200, which is way overkill, but has the latest IGP, together with 6 P-Cores and 8 E-Cores. I can't imagine that will be an issue (performance wise) for at least a decade.

It really sounds like any non-F AM5 CPU would do but the 'G' ones do idle a lot better; although mobo setting may (haven't looked at AM5 but with previous gens it certainly did and I don't think this has changed) make a difference there too. If there were any decent < 500W PSU that too can make a difference to power (over) usage.

Off topic, but it is someone who doesn't want to handle or worry about files: I'd make sure there was a decent backup strategy. Spinners have got expensive (or have not come down compared to SSDs) but are better for arching - personally I'd go and buy two x 4TB and either Raid-1 them (but only using Windows not any motherboard RAID feature - you want the drives to be recoverable if the motherboard goes down), or set up some duplication job. Make a Windows partition* and use the rest as data partition and then the 2nd drive will have a bit of slack space. Although maybe buy a small NVMe to boot off and just make the two spinners identical.

Of course, that would be only local duplicates and as they say a file does not exist unless it is in at least three places: original, local backup, and remote off-site backup!

Ignore all this if they have a NAS, multiple portable drives, an cloud storage subscription etc. Since he had them digitised he may even have them on optical backups (no idea how reliable bluray is a backup but I did recedntly see they now have 100GB or so blank discs which makes 4TB a lot more doable).

Here's a 245K build, if you really wanted to throw money at it. This CPU is on offer elsewhere and should have been discounted (everywhere) ages ago, so don't pay 265K money for it :o

Why does the large drive need to be NVMe/SSD? Is there a reason for this choice?

NVMe are great for quick access and if you are working, editing, recording with film, photo footage or even music production. But don't believe the best option for movie collection and playback, nor most reliable for archived material, though not an issue if material is backed up.

Is there a budget in mind? Closed or windowed case preference or even an RGB avoidance? Is this collection of film material going to grow?

Does something smaller and easier to move that is quiet and unimposing come across as better suited?

In this instance, the AMD 8500G is a lower wattage CPU that has all the required CPU/GPU power needed for the mentioned tasks.
To be honest, as no actual work or editing is being done to any of the video files, 16gb of memory would be enough would it not?

PSU choice would be the MODULAR BeQuiet 550w gold which is £65 elsewhere.
