Advice on creating icons?

Evening all

I am trying to create some icons for my desktop but i am having a really annoying issue. Basically an example is linked below

This sky logo has a white background behind the logo but i have been trying to remove it but i have no idea how. All i want is the actual image not the background.

Any idea how to do this? i have tried using paint.net but had no luck at all

the background to remove that in photoshop , on your eraser tool hold it and it will give you another type of eraser to choose , magic eraser tool use that
