Advice on current build

Hello all,

I recently bought a build from a friend to give pc gaming a go before I commit myself financially to a high end rig.

I've been working my way through some of the older titles such as TF2/Bioshock and I've been having noticeable lag spikes. In TF2 the fps often dips down to low 40's/high 30's and in Bioshock during the fire scene at the start, my fps bombs from 100+ to 30ish.

I was wondering if this is to be expected with the spec I'm running?
What could be the cause of this? As I assumed that the build would be able to handle those sort of older titles without a hitch.

245x2 @ 2.9
Gigabyte M61PME-S2P
550TI
4Gb Kingston HyperX
500W OCZ

Cheers, :)

Hi,
Not sure if im missing something or not what cpu you is that? I see is an am2 board so im guessing its an amd of sort

EDIT the 245 was an dual core energy efficient model not really a gaming cpu id say 30-40 fps sounds about right for bioshock

Thanks for the reply.

Could anyone recommend a reasonable upgrade to tide me over till December when I get a new build?

I was thinking of throwing a 965 on the board which according to gigabyte is supported.
However the board only supports PCIE1.0 cards, so I am tempted to upgrade the mobo too. (I'm not sure if there is a noticeable performance hit when running PCIE2.0 cards on the mobo?)

what budget? and personally if your upgrading in december I wouldnt bother spending lots of money as you wont be able to carry over to the new build

what I would do is spend tactically on an ssd or new case and psu so that you can carry them across to the new build and in the ssds case get a bit of a performance boost, my recommendation would be the samsung 830
