Advice on current System build

Basically I've started building my new system, with the parts below.

I've not much experience with it, its only the second time i've tried it, and the first time on my own. I'd got around to setting it up and everything seemed fine, I read all the manuals and made sure I followed them, checked the connections etc then tried to start it up.

First try when the power button was pressed on everything internally seemed to work, the cpu, front rear and graphics card fans ran fine, green light on the mother board etc but it wouldn't boot, the monitor screen remained dead. I did some searching through the internet for issues with this mother board and I read in a few places that there's a missprint in the manual about the correct ram placement. (Usually motherboard being colour coded for the ram I'm told, but the mother board manual if followed, which I did, means the ram will be in different coloured sections)

Thinking this may be the problem I switched the ram to the suggested new settings and tried booting again, with no change.

I re-read the manuals again at this time to see if I'd missed a step and noticed that I hadn't connected the 4-pin ATX12v power cable to the mother board, thinking that this was my obvious mistake I went looking on the cpu for the correct cable. (The mother board having a 24 pin and 4 pin power)

This power supply didn't have a separate 4-pin ATX12v it had a 24 pin with the detachable 4 pins to make a 20 pin one.

My question is basically have I bought the wrong power supply, the mother board manual seems to imply that I could use split the psu cable into the four 4 and 20 pin and use the 20 pin in the mother boards 24 pin receiver but that dosn't seem quite right.

Is this possibile or should I just buy a new, correct, psu. Also if anyone has heard anything about the ram placing on this mother board i'd be grateful for information on that as well. Or if I've just made a stupid error in the parts selection and you think I've got incomparable parts?

I have that mobo and a corsair psu (although a different model to yours) and I had to detach the extra 4 pins from the cable to make it work. Seems fine. I dont think that is your problem.

I can only suggest checking all of the cable connections.

Also what happens if you leave it? Does everything just keep running indefinitely with nothing on the screen or does it cut out eventually? Could it be a screen problem?

If it is cutting out then check that your cpu cooler is seated correctly. If it is not then the cpu will be overheating and cutting off automatically.

So you detached the 4 pin from the 24 to make it a 20 and put the twenty pin in the 24 socket in the mother board and the four that you detached in the 4 pin slot at the top right?

Have I got that right? I just didn't want to try that before I talked to someone about it. To detach the 4 from the 24 and then make it reach to put it in the 4-pin ATX12v would require me to cut the cable tidier that came with the psu which I guess would/may void its warranty. I didnt want to try experimenting if it ment I might be breaking something.
