Hi all,

I was wondering what pointers anyone could give me on starting a Minecraft server. I have set up a server with Apex and currently it's just me and my admin on the whitelist. I want the server to be PvE survival mode and to get the thing running and public in a couple of weeks.

What kinds of things should I be paying attention to and what's the best way to start? I am using Linux and so far have had no problem in getting Minecraft working and connecting to the world.

Any advice would be great, thank you.

What sort of thing would you like to know? I assume it's Java?

You'd have to decide if you want to be 100% vanilla or if you would like some plugins. Some plugins are purely for block logging purposes, others can totally change gameplay mechanics including stopping PvP, setting teleports to homes/other players etc, trading the list is endless, so that's gonna be your first decision I guess.

The servers I've played on/admin on/currently run have for the most part be what I'd call vanilla+, so for example my server has a block logging plugin (coreprotect) so any griefing is tied to a specific player and can be rolled back, a claims plugin (griefprevention) whereby players can "claim" their builds to stop others griefing it and the only game changing plugin is a tree chopping one (UltimateTimber) , whereby removing the bottom bit of a tree will cause the whole tree to come down, but the axe will still take a durability hit. It's just a QoL plugin tbh. I also have Dynmap running so players who don't use a minimap can see the world as they explore it and I also have a datapack now a plugin (SinglePlayerSleep) that allows fewer players to sleep (Vanilla, everyone online has to sleep, with this datapack you can config it to a certain % of online players) My server is PvE but there's nothing stopping players from doing PvP if they so wish.

That's just the first things that pop into my head - ask away any other specifics you want to know :)
