Advice on large orders - order everything separately

So, i've had a a torrid time with my lastest order. Suffice to say if you have a bulk order it's OCuKs policy not to reserve stock. What that means is, if when you order, one item goes out of stock before shipping, your whole order is delayed. No surprise there, but if that item comes back in stock when something else goes out, your order is delayed again. Essentially you have to wait until the stars align and every item is available at the exact same time on the website.

For those of you building new 58XX sytems consider that, as if you pre-order now with everything but the 58XX in stock then when they arrive in stock your PSU for example goes out of stock you won't get anything. Then when your PSU comes back the 5850s are gone again, well you're waiting once again. Better hope no one orders any of your other components while this is happening. Oh yes and your card will be charged the second you order, whether you're getting your system next day, next week, next year.

I've just been chatting to Sam, team leader of the Sales call centre and he said that it's a possibility that with this policy I may never get my order. That's exactly what he said.

But wait, there's a solution!
He recommended to get round this - order every item separately. If you qualify for free shipping well, it makes no difference to you and you avoid this idiotic policy.

Order everything you want that is in stock.
Either wait for the rest to come into stock, or shop elsewhere.
Simple.

I ordered my whole pc, £1200, my 5850 was out of stock but due in soon, they sent the rest of my stuff out before my 5850 came into stock, it arrived a few days later on its own at no extra charge.. I was quite happy with that, and was about to send a webnote asking could they do this for me but it had already been shipped, perfect for me!

Not that simple, I ordered a GPU yesterday which I was expecting today. The website claimed, and still does, that 10 cards are in stock. I phoned up today enquiring why my order was delayed and was told that they are out of stock.

Sorry to hear that but I've never experienced that issue and I just received my whole order.
Both the case and soundcard went out of stock before my order went to the warehouse, but some kind soul had taken the last case and soundcard to go with my order:D.
I guess it's all just down to luck but I'd like to think that it's cause OCUK cares about their customers;).

When this happened to me, I just sent a webnote asking them to remove the out of stock item(s) and ship what they did have.
For the OOS items, I re-ordered or purchased them from somewhere else.

How do I send a webnote? I wanted to complete this build by Friday and was expecting the order today, I can get the card elsewhere it is in stock, but the memory I need is on the same order.

I ordered my parts last week, and asked for the 5850 to be included - the cooler I wanted was out if stock which did hold my order up, but the 5850 which was in demand was held for me until I chose a new cooler.
So maybe, you just need to ask them to keep your order together.

There must be a good reason for the system to be like that, it doesn't seem like OcUK's style.

I'll definatly bear this in mind thanks for posting.

As mentioned above, try a post in the Customer services forum - link.

There's usually someone helpful lurking about, it's less formal and an easier medium to communicate through than a web note and the response turn around is usally quicker.
