I don't visit this section a lot to be honest but I think now is a good time to visit and ask for some opinions and advice for loosing weight.

I expect to be slated a little since this is OcUK but lets get on with it..

I'm about 14.8 stone and I am looking to go back down to 12 stone.

A little background that I feel I should mention, I have always been fit/healthy up until the end of 2005 when (here we go) I got into World of Warcraft. I also had settled down with a GF (Now my wife).

From about 2000-2005 I had been going on and off to the gym and during the end of 2004 to the end of 2005 I did martial arts 5 days a week for a good couple of hours while living in Toronto Canada (I was trained by Jong Soo Park, I loved it!).

The deal is I need to loose about 2 and a half stone by the beginning of September, I had previously lost 1 stone about 5 years ago in 12 days when I was about 13 stone however I'm not expecting the same results, I was a lot fitter then.

The ides I have in my head is run for up to an hour 5 days a week in the morning before work and in the evening do situps, pushups and use a few weights for my upper body as I believe I will need to use weights to prevent having excess fat.

What I would like is some pointers, I also need to buy a small weight set and if someone has a suggestion on a good set for me that would be appreciated. I'm only interested in working on my upper body with the weights as my legs are still very strong from playing football most of my life and doing the martial arts thing (It was mostly kicking).

Thanks for reading.

If interested I can post a weekly update on how many pounds I loose each week. I will be starting on Monday once I clear out whats in the fridge now.

I'm aware that consuming fewer calories and running will loose weight. My concern is with loosing so much weight in just over 2 months is if I don't use any weights my appearance will look rather concerning. Call it a fear, I really don't know this was my main reason for posting.

I have no intention to build muscle while loosing weight, thats pretty much impossible the weight theory is that by keeping some routine with the weights while burning so many calories will keep my body into proportion.. again, my theory which is why I am here.

As for the diet I totally, agree. The first step is cutting the junk food and snacks (as per usual when I use to use the gym) but I think I may need to put some effort into it this time rather than just eating my main meals a day.

Thanks

As for just doing upper body, don't. Do a whole body workout. So what if you're legs are strong, make them even stronger. Very important to do a whole body workout rather than concentrating on specific parts.

The thing is I'm not looking to build muscle, just to keep it into proportion while loosing weight. If I did gain some muscle then that will only be a good thing.

I thought by running up to an hour a day that would be enough workout with my legs since I feel most of my problems are with my upper body.

In a perfect scenario I would like to be 12 stone and toned really nicely. For now I am only setting the goal of reaching around 12 stone by September and then I will be looking at building more muscle and loosing the fat (which may raise my weight slightly but again thats something further down the line).

Thanks for pointing out the extra muscle/calorie thing, I never knew that!

Thanks Jonny,

In regards to the weights, I feel I need to in order to keep my body in proportion.

Example: I have slight man boobs, now if I loose 2/3 stone by september and I don't do any weights - will they still be there?

I feel I need to keep doing press ups, sit ups and some weights to keep everything in order.

To be honest loosing the weight will be easy, I have lost weight many times before. The problem is how will I look having gained so much in recent years and burning off more than ever in a relative short space of time. I really wonder what I will look like by September if I don't do this properly.

A decent weight training regime sounds like a practical thing to do, any ideas or directions you could send me too? Would this help loosing weight? Or is this a balance between building muscle and loosing weight? For now just loosing the weight is my main goal, I feel setting to many targets at the beginning will put me off quickly. Apoligies for so many questions there ;)

The main reason for this at the moment is to purely lose weight. Once I achieve that improving on it will be my next goal :) I have seem the gym rats thread and for now I will be staying away until I'm around the weight I want ;)

Hats off to you that is one hell of an achievement. And thank you for the links.

Once I have lost the weight I am after I would like to get in touch with you for a bit more personal advice (around September time) if thats alright with you.

I would like to take just the step of loosing the large amount of weight in the short space of time and then build on it to something similar to how you have done. Granted to say this and do it are totally different but your a fine example of someone who has gone out and done it.

Guzzidom: Thank you for your post, it is quite helpful to see a specific day of what someone will eat to lose weight.

When I have lost weight in the past I have cut out the (what seemed to me) the obvious foods white bread for example which I would tend to eat in the evenings with most meals.

At the moment I'm clearing the freezer/fridge out this week and will be shopping with the wife on Friday. Fish and meat are definatly on this list, I have always known I should eat more of this but what I am thinking about to myself is how will I eat a lot of this each week every week. I need to come up with some variety.

Having picked up on using weights to speed up my metabolism I would like to ask OcUK (rather than google it for now) which is more beneficial for weight loss and for increasing my metabolism.

Less reps heavy weights? or lots of reps and lighter weights? I know using heavy weights and less reps will build muscle so I presume the lighter weight but I would like to confirm this.

Also I need to buy a small set of weights to use in my apartment, bare in mind I do not need any large equipment, I have free gym membership in my apartment building. The reason I want some small weights for my own is for personal use during the next 3 months of weight loss. I would prefer to do it on my own rather than in the gym.

I will be running for upto an hour in the mornings before work. I believe cardio is the best method to loose such a large amount of weight in a relative short amount of time. But as I said I would like to bring weights into this to increase my metabolism and keep my fat into proportion while I am loosing the weight.

I will be posting every week in this thread to let people know how its going. I am a little suprised by the large amount of comments and some of them have been extremly helpful and enlightening.

Have a feeling you don't want to hear some of this :)

Quite the opposite :) When I was doing weights I always preffered lifting heavy weight over light weights, I would wake up the next day feeling tension in my arms or chest and that would give me a sense of achieving my goal.

Don't worry about the number of reps ;) My father taught me all about that when I first took an interest.

I generally do 3 sets and about 10 reps and take a 90 second break inbetween each set I do.

After the 1st week I had lost 7lbs. This was checked on Sunday night.

Will update again on Sunday or Monday.

Following which diet? That seems like an unhealthy figure to lose in 1 week

Cutting out sweets and junk food. I don't follow someones guide or book I use common sense and generally what I have picked up myself.

I do a lot of running that is contributing it. This week I have lost far less, I believe the half stone was mostly down to the gassy fizzy drinks I was excessively drinking. My stomach shrunk after just a few days.

Lost 3 more lbs last week. Couldn't go to the gym this morning mind as for some unknown reason the door was locked!

I'm not lifting weights at the moment I am just running on the treadmill for 30mins in the morning before work and sometimes 30 mins in the evening. I'm just keeping this routine up until I reach 13 stone or 12.5 then I will stop trying to loose weight and possible do resistance training.

I just cut out sweets and junk food but on the weekend I will have one unhealthy meal and something sweet each weekend, just to keep myself happy.

I was 15 stone at the beginning of July I'm now 13st 12.

I had one really bad week where I put a few pounds back on due to getting some american food imported.

I'm somewhat starting to get near 13 and a half stone now. Very good progress imo :) I think by the end of next week I will be there then I have another half a stone to burn by the end of August.

So far everything is on track.

FWIW. I do hate running, even when I have my MP3 player on it is boring as hell and takes a lot of energy from me but it is paying off. Weights will come later, while what I'm doing for now is paying off there is no reason to change my routine just yet.

The only difference I have seen more recently is that it is harder to shed those pounds, but each week there falling off.

I can also fit into some of my clothes I couldn't get into 2 months ago.
