Evening all i have been reading that malware seems to be a far more concerning factor the virus's these days, i was just curious for some advice to know a good reliable malware protection program. I have microsoft security essentials installed would this be deemed enough? I have heard that malware bytes or super anti spyware are meant to be pretty good.

Thanks

A virus is a type of malware - I wouldn't get too hung up on the definitions of each sub-set. There isn't a one-stop shop to avoiding malware, it's a combination of:

  • Software updates (Windows, Office, Flash, Adobe Reader, Quicktime... you name it)
  • Getting software from trusted sources (i.e. don't download and install random crap)
  • Least privilege user accounts & don't run services you don't need
  • Firewall (firewall router/Windows firewall)
  • Antivirus (check the AV thread)

Supplement the above with common sense and you'll be fine. We have pages and pages of discussion about the topic but if you stick to those bullet points, which is a short one-size-fits-all answer, you won't go far wrong.

Directly from the author's site. If SHA1 / MD5 hashes are posted on the main site, you can safely use mirrors and verify the download once it hits your hard drive.

Of course, there is a very tiny chance that the author assembled the download on a compromised machine. Trust has to start somewhere.. :p
