I own one laptop, a desktop system with a K8N Neo4, 64 bit AMD CPU & 4GB RAM and another desktop system with a MSI K7N2, 32 bit AMD CPU & 1GB RAM. The latter two machines run XP, are ancient and now slow and VERY unreliable. I want to replace them with a single system and would appreciate help in choosing a motherboard, CPU, etc..

Applications are spreadsheet, word processing, listening to music and extensive Internet access for email and research purposes. I don't watch films or play games on a PC. I don't currently use anything like Photoshop but would quite like to start.

I would like a motherboard that offered at least 4 x SATA, and lots of USB ports. Ideally I wpould also like to have 2 x PATA and a couple of PCI slots to allow me to access my old hard disks and use some old PCI cards. For the present I would use an existing graphics card, two screens, keyboard and mouse.

I am not particularly looking for a small motherboard since I will be using an existing case.

Any suggestions for a suitable motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler and RAM please?

Many thanks in advance :)

Finally went for:
  • Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI motherboard
  • Intel Core i7-4790K CPU
  • Silverstone SST-AR01 Argon CPU Cooler
  • 2 x 8 GB of Corsair Vengeance Pro RAM
Seemed to tick most of my boxes although probably faster than I need. This motherboard has two PCI slots and even has a Centronics parallel port for my ancient LaserJet!

The one thing I haven't been able to resolve is how I can connect up "old" PATA drives of which I have quite a few - any suggestions?
