So finally deciding to build a proper gaming PC as my laptop doesn't seem to cut it anymore. Would appreciate any advice/improvements etc. I don't know a great deal about components, but have been reading quite a bit.

What I've Spec'd so far:

Case: Coolermaster C70 case Arctic White:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-066-CS
Processor: Intel Core I5 3570k
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V Intel Z77
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8)
GPU: 2GB GTX 670
Hard Drive: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
SSD: 128GB Crucial RealSSD M4 Read 500MB/s Write 175MB/s
Power Supply: Corsair HX 650W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650HXUK)
Optical Drive: LG BH10LS38 10x BluRay-RW / 16 x DVD±RW Lightscribe Drive - Black (Retail)
Network Card: Homeplugs x2
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Monitor: 24 inch Dell U2412M IPS 1920x1200

I'm intending it primarily for gaming/watching movies, it has stretched my budget a little - just over £1500 when I was originally aiming for around 1200-1300, so if anyone could offer cheaper options I'd be grateful! Maybe a cheaper optical drive or RAM?

Couple of Questions:
1) Are these all compatible with each other? Particularly do they fit well in the Corsair C70? I chose this case because it's reasonably smaller than other cases and is quite good for mobility.
2) Do I need an extra coooler/fans? I'm not intending to overclock?
3) Are Homeplugs worth it? I could save some money by getting rid of these
4) I assume I can play Xbox on the monitor by using a HDMI to DVI adaptor - as it has no HDMI port?

Sorry about the many questions and any improvements are very welcome!

Thanks

  1. Everything should fit fine :)
  2. You will be fine with the stock cooler you can always buy a cheap 3rd party one at a later time if you want to.
  3. Never used homeplugs so I can't comment on those.
  4. I picked a different monitor which has a HDMI socket, it also has a DVI socket so you can connect your PC using a DVI-DVI cable which is still a digital signal.
If the price is still to high then you can drop the blu-ray re-writer and change it for just a ROM one instead (read only) which would save you some cash. Why are you thinking of buying a network card?

Thanks very much :)
I have wireless at home so I just assumed I would need one of these?
I've chosen this case instead as it's cheaper, is it still okay with the other parts?

Also what's the difference between the the motherboard you recommended and the Asus P8z77? Yours is cheaper :)
Thanks for the Blu ray tip - probably a stupid question but what's the writer for anyway? Uploading to Blu Ray quality?

Sorry for the late reply been rather busy :(

The Asus board has WiFi built in from the looks of things but the Gigabyte one doesn't that is really the only main difference I can see really. It also says it has something for precise tuning of the CPU but since you are not over clocking it then there is little point in having that.

It isn't a network card you want then, it's a wireless card you want ;) a network card would imply having a wired connection via ethernet cable (LAN). If where you are having the computer is miles away from the router then home plugs might be a good idea unless you have a powerful router which can send the wireless signal a long way.

That case should be fine :) and as for the blu-ray, a re-writer allows you to burn blu-ray discs as well as re-writable blu-ray discs. If you don't do anything with blu-ray then a standard DVD drive would be fine and save you some cash.
