building a rig for the old man, gaming at 1280p, lots of lightroom use, some video editing, upgrade from a Q6600 system, I hope I can build him a nice upgrade

Already has a 560Ti and a case (though I'm tempted to get a better budget case).

Looking at purchasing:

i5-3570K oem

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler

Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB)

Samsung 256GB SSD 830 Notebook/Apple Series

2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s

The only thing I may need is a PSU, he has a Corsair VX 450W powering his Q6600, 560Ti, 4gig of ram, and 3 hard drives - would the 450W do for his new rig? I'm thiking it may be a little under powered, but then his new cpu will be less of a power drain, but there is twice as much ram in the new system.

I'm considering a new case too, but it has to be budget (preferably £60ish).

thanks for any advice :)

[edit] the spec above is about on my budget, so I'm really looking for advice on better alternatives / compatibility issues with ram and mobo etc, I'm very rusty on current tech

Unless he specifically needs 2x1gb hdd, a 2gb hdd would be cheaper. The case is on special offer this weekend. Psu will be fine. Mobo is for single Gpu, if you need a board for sli, then you would need a bigger Psu.

wow, fast responses, thanks guys.

I'm going for the SSD for OS and apps, the two 1TB drives are for all his RAW image files, one will be for backup. I've considered RAID, but I'm gonna keep it simple and use a software solution. He doesn't like the idea of cloud storage, he also has a 500GB external but I don't want to use this for backup, I wan't to go for a neat backup solution with an internal HDD.

Regarding the memory, I was tempted with the Kingston because of the better latencies, but the TeamGroup you have suggested seem like a bargain - will he really benefit from better latencies on this system running on W8?

Very nice mobo you suggest guys, what is the main difference from the UD3H with this board?

thanks again for the advice :)

[edit] btw, current case is an unbranded budget case I got from ocuk a few years ago, would love to have something with better cable management to be honest.
