Hi, recently my 8800 GTS died (Windows saying device cannot start, Code 10, also weird blue lines down the windows loading screen) and was wondering what would be the best value for money card. Ill mainly be using it for Counterstrike 1.6, Quake Live but also a bit TF2 and Left 4 Dead. Ill be playing Diablo 3 when its out and maybe a few other upcoming games however i wont be going over 1280x1024 (17" CRT :/). Im completely out of the loop with new PC stuff so just wondered what the best option would be for around £100-150 max? Ive always gone with Nvidia however im open to all suggestions.

Itll be going in a C2D @ 3.2, Asus p5b and 2gb rig.

Cheers!

ATI Radeon HD4890 or Nvidia GTX275 IMO. If these are too dear, look at the HD4870 or GTX260 (both are probably twice the performance of your 8800GTS).

therye good cards, however slightly out of budget, Id say go lower anyway a 260 or 4870, new cards coming out end of year, thats why prices have been dropping, imo

I do intend on upgrading the rest of the rig at some point later in the year, but not the graphics card so i guess it needs to be kind of future proof

Well, are there any cheap cards around the same performance of an 8800gts that could bide me over for a while until the new ones are out? Id go second hand but i kind of need to make a purchase this week really (sucks not having a working pc! :) )

i picked up a 9800gt 1gb for £50 from an auction site somewhere on the web and i can play crysis on high setting with 1680x1050 resolution. Don't know how that compares to the 8800gts, but if you are looking for a cheap card until the DX11 ones are released then, in my opinion and experience with it, that is a good cheap option.

i think a hd4850 would have a noticable increase in performance and are fairly cheap now so u can save ur money for the 5xxx series.

Grab a 4870.

Will notice a good jump in performance. Its cheap and will tide you over till DX11 comes out and the prices of the new cards have dropped.
