hi all, first post here as i figured i could use ur advice ;)

I need a new CPU HSF (is that correct name?) and i want everyones advice.

I want a fan that will work with an athlon ii x2 250 regor. it needs to be smallish preferably and VERY quiet (or as quiet as possible).

Preferable within a £20-£40 price range,

Here are my system specs:
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
CPU - AMD Athlon X2 250 @3.0ghz stock HSF
RAM - 4.0gb (2x2gb module) Corsair Dual channel DDR2 @800mhz
MOBO - ASUS M2N68 Plus (AM2+ i believe...)
GRAPHICS - ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB @770 core, 900 mem
HDD1 - 500GB Seagate 7200rpm 32mb
HDD2 - 250gb Maxtor something or other (storage)

i may do i slight OC on the Athlon... but not much

temps are 30c stock and 78c full load, so id like it to be cooler

heres a pic of the inside of my tower (a jeantech aqua) so you can get an idea as to how much space i have..

In the future i am upgrading to:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090t 3.2ghz with no OC.
RAM: some nice 4gb modules (2x4gb) so i dont want the cooling fan to cover RAM slots if possible so i can upgrade to 12/16gb.
MOBO - ASUS M4A88T-M

so i neeed the Cooler to be compatible with the new MOBO/CPU.

i was initially looking at artic cooling freezer pro 7 rev2 but im not sure how loud this is, + its quite large.

also, is this the best mobo choice, its £60, is there anything cheaper which will fulfill the same needs/more...

thanks for the help, much appreciated.

thanks a lot for the advice guys, i think ill go for the coolermaster, as its cheap and seems quiet/small.

im very surprised at how fast the reply's were, and pleased with the advice :D

on another note, could someone please explain RAID to me, id really like to know what it is ,and im too stupid to understand wikipedia :p

also, the MOBO im upgrading to has a feature called crossfirex, if im correct, i can use my 4870, alongside the integrated 4250, is that right?

and lastly, what are the benefits of AMD cool and quiet? will this make my CPU fan quieter while im waiting for the coolermaster? and are there performance losses?

thanks again everyone :D

There are lots of types or raid.
Raid 0 - Half of data get split into one drive and the other half into the other for faster write times.
Raid 1 -Full data goes into both drives and there is also raid 5 10 and 6 which I don't quite understand

Amd cool and quiet basically controls the cpu's fan and when the cpu is not under a very heavy load it will slow the fan down and it is also minimizes the amount of electricity the cpu is using . Tbh i don't the intergrated 4250 would be any use as it cannot keep up with the 4870 .

RAID allows you to combine hard drives together for larger storage and more often faster read / writes or redundancy.

RAID 0 combines 2 drives together so you get double the capacity and usually faster read / writes but if one drive fails the whole array is lost as the data is spread across 2 drives.

RAID 1 allows for redundancy as the data is copied on the 2nd drive but the storage is only as big as one drive, if the drive fails you can replace without loss of the array and data.

There are various other arrays which can combine both of the above, this just gives a small idea of the common formats used.

okay, well i enabled cool and quiet in my bios, and it doesnt seem to have done anyhthing, fan is still the same high speed (i think my cpu fan runs at a constant speed. i thought they changed depending on temp?) and CPUz doesnt show the processor has been told to use C&Q

does anyone know how to enable Cool and quiet on window 7?? doesnt seem to be working...

also, how to you control the fan speed on the AMD HSF. it runs at a constant speed, shouldnt it change speed depending on temp?
please help

Your new mobo would be ideal for your needs and its a good qualitu board , the one thing is it doesn't support crossfire (But you might not want crossfire) . Oh and if you want a smal decent cpu cooler you could go with this : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...57&subcat=1395

thinking about it, any CHEAP!!! motherboards that fulfill the same needs as my 88T-M but support crossfire?

ok, i did some research, and looked in my PC, the CPU Fan is using a 4-pin connector to mobo, and most people seem to think 3-pin is better?

does 3-pin enable the fan to auto slow down, as mine is 100% speed constantly,

PLEASE HELP!!!

Stick with the 4-pin connector as its the fourth pin that controls fan speed using PWM.

Your new cooler will have a bigger surface area than the stock cooler and will also use a larger fan. As a general rule, larger fans can run at lower speeds and still shift the same amount of air as a small fan running at higher speed. Therefore the large fan will make less noise than the smaller one.

Try using "SpeedFan" to get a better picture of your actual fan speed and CPU temps.

How urgent is the upgrade?
I'd be inclined to wait to see what bulldozer has to offer.

The Arctic Cooler isnt that big, but there are better things to buy.

yeah, i think ill wait for bulldozer to come out, it sound epic :D

the only problems i can see are
- bulldozer may cost ****loads
- new mobo(which i need anyway - but will likely be expensive)
- new memory???

can anyone tell me a summary of new stuff in bulldozer cores? so a newb like me can understand :D
