Advice on new gaming rig (1k budget)

Hey guys,

First post here, but I’ve bought things from ocUK in the past and haven’t had any problems. I’ve bought RAM and graphics cards for older machines, but now I’m looking to buy a whole new rig. I’ve only bought from PC World in the past (I can hear the laughter!) but now that I’m a bit older and wiser, with the last PC I got being 3 years ago, I’m ready to get a new one which is properly made for what I want.

Problem is, I’ve got a £1000 budget and I want it to be a future-proof rig for the next 2-3 years at least but my PC knowledge is quite low as to what is the best bang for my buck. I see the configurators on the site but I’ve really no idea which to use.

So my question is: could you guys throw together some gaming PC builds for me, please? I’d be so grateful. I have a budget of £1000 but I’d be ecstatic to have some rig builds between £800-900 to choose from. If the extra £100 will get me something considerably better, I’ll definitely consider it. Please give a short run-down on your reasoning behind the choices you make as well, just to help me out. That would be so awesome of you guys if you could do that.

I have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, Windows 7, 1TB External HDD so all I really need is the gaming rig itself. I’ve picked the case I’d like which is this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-037-ZA. It looks good and seems to have very nice reviews and is reasonably priced. SSD is optional, and 1TB HDD would be more than enough I reckon. Other than that, you guys are free to do whatever you like with the rest of my budget!

Keep in mind this will be primarily for gaming, light application use and day-to-day things like internet browsing and watching videos but heavy gaming with high/max settings is what this rig is going to be used as mainly.

If you have any questions, please ask. I’m very new to this sort of thing, and all the numbers/letters in models of CPU etc just confuse me. I’ll leave it to you professionals to talk amongst yourselves if you make comparative builds and then I will decide.

If anyone can do this for me, I’d be so happy and thankful. Even if you don’t make a build, comments on any that have been made or the questions below are appreciated.

Cheers!

Chris

Extra questions: If I make a component build from a list of parts someone gives, and ocUK puts it together, do I get a free 24-month warranty like some of their pre-built machines? All parts will be bought from their site, obviously. Also, if an SSD is placed into the build, will ocUK format it ready for OS install when I receive it, or do I have to contact them about it? Will ocUK OC the CPU if I ask them (if it’s possible, of course). Is professional cable management an additional extra or does it come free when building like this?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the advice there. I will definitely take it into consideration, although I would get quite confused with picking the best components since I always imagine more money doesn’t always equal better (or considerably more) performance. I keep reading stuff about Intel i7 CPUs etc not being much better for gaming over i5 ones, but I don’t know hardly anything so that’s why I really appreciate your help here. Like I say, all these numbers and letters on the end of different models confuse me.

Hi zak,

Thank you for providing that build list! That’s exactly the sort of thing I’m looking for. Under budget as well, I’m really happy with that.

How do I go about contacting them with a build list? Should I just point them at this thread? Do I need to get a quote on it? I’d imagine that the final total price shown there doesn’t include build costs?

Sorry for all the questions. It's my first time doing this and using a site to build a PC, so I'm not really knowledgeable about what I can expect.

Hi zak,

I just saw you added a system configuration build. Is this just a comparable build to show what the difference in price would be vs buying the parts? I’m not sure why you put that there. Explain please?

Hi Doomed,

I’ve looked at your suggestions and if it will give me a noticeable increase in performance, I wouldn’t mind changing the SSD and RAM to what you say.

By the way, how do I show a basket list like you guys have done? (Nevermind, I figured it out).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £239.99

1 x Plextor M5S 128GB Solid State Drive - (PX-128M5S) £82.99
1 x Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £59.99

1 x LG GH24NS95 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.98
Total : £891.89 (includes shipping : £12.50).

This is what I'm looking at in my basket. I changed the RAM as suggested, since it did look a bit large. Same price as well so I'd imagine it's just cosmetic. I stuck with the cheaper SSD.

To be honest, I am quite happy with that list. It's under-budget, has got positive comments so far from you guys, and ticks the right boxes.

How much more on top of that would I be looking at if I were to get the CPU OC, cable managed, warranty added and the build cost on top? That's presuming the last 2 cost extra (I've no idea, I'd ring ocUK support but not sure if they're open on a Sunday and forums are free! :D)

When you have some free time Give OCUK a call..

Another user on here did that not long ago. He came on the forums, got a spec from us and phoned the shop. He talked the 5UB talked through what we'd suggested and the budget he had and the came to an agreement.

If you want that service im pretty sure OCUK can provide that for you..

Just one thing to check, the clearence of the Cooler on the side of the case.. It should fit, but quite tight.

Thank you very much.

I will give them a call in the morning if no one has any knowledge of the prices of the services I'm asking about. I've had some good interactions via e-mail as well so I might just send one of those off now and see what they say tomorrow.

I was actually wondering about that cooler - it does look quite big. Is there a comparable one for the same price, which would fit snuggly into that case?

Good plan.

The reason a lot of the top end cooler are high is they use 140mm fans.

The smallest (high wise) of these is the NH-D14, as youll see from my sig, i have. :)

The cooler is 158mm high, the same as used in this review: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1177-page3.html
(Height ref: http://www.zerotherm.net/eng/product/fz120.asp)

For peace of mind the D14 would be my choice.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £62.98
Total : £72.88 (includes shipping : £8.25).

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to help me. I've always been impressed with the members here on ocUK, but I didn't think I'd get so much help in such a short time.

So this is what my basket is looking like now:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £239.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM £187.99

Total : £894.88 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Looks quite nice to me! I'll be sending this off in an e-mail to ocUK later on if there's no other tweaks people can see. To me that looks perfect. I had initially planned on getting a nVidia GTX 670 but I read the 7950 is comparable anyway?

the 7950 sits wuite nicely between the 660ti and the 670 in performance, though the price of the 7950 is the main factor of why it's so popular. It will easily play any game you want on high settings..

The 670 is faster but you pay a fair chunk more for it. If you can reach that far i wouldn't blame you but if your unsure the 7950 is perfect.

Aha! Well if that's the case, I will stick with the 7950 and upgrade to a higher spec card than the GTX 670 in a year or so when more powerful cards drop in price.

Thanks again for your help, and everyone else. It seems like I've got a good spec to query ocUK about. Hopefully a few of those parts that're on a weekly offer at the moment don't go back up in price and bugger my quoted price. :D
