We bought a car in March to tide us over until we could get to Canada. The owner says they filled in the info online and all was well. We still haven't received the new V5 to say we own the car. If you try and phone the DVLA it says the lines are busy. Before that it said they weren't open due to the virus. We are hoping to leave for Canada at some point but surely it will be impossible to sell the car? Does anyone have some advice or experience in this area?

Did you get the new keepers slip? If so you can apply for a new v5 for free, if not then it'll cost you 26 of your finest pounds. The forms are on the .gov site.

Is there anyway to find out if we are the new keeper already or if the original application never got processed? We were worried about messing up the system by having two applications

Have you taxed the car? Tax is no longer transferable, so if it's still on-going from the previous owner then it's not been done:
https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

Alternatively, a HPI check will tell you the start date of the current keeper.

When the previous owner fills out the form online, there's a bit to enter his email address and it also asks if you want to put in the new keepers details. Ask him for this email?

I bet he's not done it.

I sold a spares or repairs car without the V5, this was back in March, took the guy till middle of june to get the V5 sent. But online is generally pretty fast, last car i bought at the beginning of July, I got the V5 within 4 days.

I sent both cars' v5s off at the end of March for a change of address, then lockdown put the brakes on everything. I got one back a couple of weeks ago but no sign of the second one yet. Annoying because I want to sell it!

If you put your reg in here (https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla) and scroll to the bottom it tells you the date the v5 was last changed which will let you know a few days before you get it in the post, but who knows how much longer it's going to take them to get through the backlog.

We bought a new campervan at the start of June and haven't yet received the v5 so wonder if things are taking somewhat longer to process at the moment.
